Mission and objectives

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Un Women China office is implementing programmes in women’s economic empowerment, ending violence against women and strengthening governance through gender responsive research, legal and policy frameworks at the national and provincial levels as well as holds a strong partnership, communication, and advocacy portfolio. The office is currently development Strategic Note (SN) 2021-2025, aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework, 2021-2025, with aim of scaling up its programmatic and partnership efforts in the country.

Context

Reporting to the Programme and Partnership Specialist, the UN Youth Volunteer on Gender Equality and Youth Engagement will help develop innovative partnerships that support the promotion of gender equality and women’s empowerment in China’s philanthropic community, develop mentorship programmes aimed at empowering young women, and create partnerships tackling gender stereotypes in cyberspace, including social media and gaming.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of the women’s economic empowerment (WEE) Programme Specialist the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: • Provide technical support in the area of Climate Change, Renewable Energy, Green Economy, etc. to relevant programmes under WEE in the office • Support research on policies and practices on relevant topics through gender perspective • Support the design of new WEE project(s) which relevant to promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment in green economic transition • Support the mapping of most relevant green economy industries for potential new programming and small research related to Climate Change, Renewable Energy, Green Economy, etc. as required • Support any other tasks as required by the supervisor Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to: • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for in-stance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities; • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers; • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible. Results/Expected Outputs • Quality technical support in Climate Change, Renewable Energy, Green Economy, etc. to relevant programmes under WEE in a timely manner • Research related to Climate Change, Renewable Energy, Green Economy, etc. conducted as required • Components related to Climate Change, Renewable Energy, Green Economy, etc. prepared for the development of new programmes. • The most relevant green economy related industries identified for potential new programmes
