Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

The Latin America and the Caribbean Office located in Panama City works closely with the 33 countries of the region - including 16 small island developing States, with a population of about 650 million people. The office works to serve the needs of the region and its activities are integrated into the work programs approved by the United Nations Environment Assembly of UN Environment (UNEA).
The LAC Office maintains the core communications function with dedicated staff, but communications and outreach is delegated to its Caribbean Sub-Regional Office (CSRO) based in Kingston, Jamaica for the Caribbean countries.
CSRO coordinates and facilitates outreach to Caribbean countries in association with various UNEP Divisions, offices, units, programmes and project initiatives. CSRO also works in close partnership with UN Country Teams (UNCTs) and other development partners, with UN agencies, funds and programmes (AFPs), research institutions and non-governmental organizations. The objective is to support countries to achieve their national mandates and international commitments on e.g. the 2030 Agenda, SDG and climate targets. The CSRO has a small team, comprising Head of Office, Programme Management Officer, Team Assistant and sundry temporary personnel. From time to time the CSRO hosts project staff conducting activities in the sub-region (e.g. Global Environment Facility Task Managers).
UNEP is expected to transmit information to a range of audiences on project status, outputs and outcomes and to report on the overall progress made by countries towards achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The CSRO communicates to Caribbean countries the priorities of UNEP’s Medium Term Strategy (2022-2025), related biennial Programme of Work (2022-2023), as well as information on other programmes, projects, events and activities.
Outreach activities include but are not necessarily limited to, identifying, cultivating and/or engaging key contacts in countries and within organizations (public & private sectors, NGO, development partners, UN AFPs etc.). Outreach establishes stakeholder feedback loops; ensures good understanding of the most effective ways of transmitting and sharing information; nurtures and facilitates partnerships; and, inter alia, helps to identify and recruit top talent. Collectively, these actions will also help the CSRO to develop a bank of intelligent data and information that can be used to inform UNEP activities and improve performance.
This is a significant task that is constantly evolving in the LAC & CSRO offices. Although the CSRO does not have a dedicated communications function, current activities are supported by LAC Office and variously performed by the existing CSRO team, supplemented with temporary staff.
UNEP encourages development of young professional talent and provides internship opportunities to work alongside its professional and project staff, to learn and develop technical, functional and/or interactive team skills during the period.
In this regard, the CSRO is seeking a motivated, capable and enterprising young professional to serve as Communications and Outreach Intern in its Jamaica office for 6-months commencing October 2022. The Internship will be primarily focused on supporting the CSRO’s functional communications and outreach activities, which are described further below. One (or more) intern(s) is sought for a six-month internship period. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns will work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of the Head of the Caribbean Sub-Regional Office.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the direct supervision of the Head of the CSRO, the Intern will work with the CSRO team to carry out the following responsibilities and in consultation with the LAC Office communications team for additional strategic context:
1) Review strategic CSRO communications targets:
• Identify high value targets in the Caribbean based on review of the range of communications targets e.g. ministry of environment &/or other ministerial focal points; UN system – resident coordinator offices (RCOs) & UNCTs; civil society groups, development partners, and other stakeholders.
• Segment communications &/or outreach needs by target where appropriate and describe the preferred mode/s of communication and outreach for each.

2) Collaborate with UNEP LAC Office Communications team on activities in the Caribbean & application of UNEP’s Visual Identity Manual:
• Develop &/or update web content for CSRO's online presence, including where possible use of photos, updating resource links etc. in line with organizational standards.
• Identify strategic opportunities to increase the visibility of CSRO activities and advocacy.
• Support at least 2 relevant social media and/or thematic campaigns, where prioritized.

3) Structure CSRO communications modalities:
• Design and develop templates and/or structured modalities for communicating and for outreach to identified target groups.
• Support CSRO on media engagement, including developing a regional network of relevant media targets to increase visibility and messaging for UNEP/CSRO thematic work and advocacy, which are consistent with organizational standards.
• Identify measures and indicators of improvement/progress/success for CSRO communications, in accordance with the UNEP PoW framework (thematic, enabling, foundational).

4) Where required, contribute to design &/or content editing for:
• Op-eds, articles, blog posts, press releases, and social media packs.
• Human/impact stories and photo stories to highlight the impact and good practices from UNEP’s Caribbean projects and initiatives. This might require collaboration with other UNEP offices and sub-programmes.
• Formulation of project case studies, project briefs/factsheets and other information materials e.g. organizing or reporting on meetings, conferences and/or workshops.
¿ Review, revision &/or updating content for the existing e-newsletter, for re-launch and/or dissemination in the region, including but not limited to updates on relevant and emerging environmental trends and issues, to inform project &/or programme development.

5) Perform any other tasks as requested by the CSRO Head.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Have advanced organizational skills and attention to detail, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Final year undergraduate or master’s degree student in environmental policy, climate change, natural resource management, development, energy efficiency and/or related field of studies.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required, since work will require research and communication, including reading and interviews, in English. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.

NOTE: "Fluency equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and "Knowledge of" equals a rating of "confident" in two of the four areas.
