CHAI’s global malaria and neglected tropical disease (NTD) program provides direct technical and operational support to countries around the globe to strengthen their programs and reduce the burden of preventable, treatable diseases. We support governments to scale up effective interventions for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance, with the goals of sustainably reducing the number of illnesses and deaths worldwide in the short-term and accelerating progress towards elimination of malaria and NTDs in the long term.

Overview of Role

CHAI is seeking a highly motivated epidemiologist with strong public health experience and analytical skills to advise CHAI malaria and NTD staff and mentor CHAI epidemiologists working directly with government counterparts to assess, design, and scale-up disease surveillance systems; conduct robust epidemiological and spatial data analysis; monitor and evaluate the success of ongoing efforts to reduce disease burden and achieve elimination in relevant geographies; and translate results for decision-makers. The individual will collaborate with a diverse team based across multiple countries and regions (including but not limited to Benin, Burkina Faso, and Senegal), government programs, academics, and public health agencies. The successful candidate will possess strong communication, organizational, and management skills; be imaginative, pragmatic, and innovative in applying epidemiological expertise to improve real-world health programs; work independently to drive implementation; and have deep personal commitment to producing high quality results.

The base location for this role is flexible within West Africa, pending country leadership approval.

• Contribute to the strategic technical vision and thought leadership for how malaria and NTD analytics and surveillance can be strengthened in the countries in francophone West and Central Africa
• Serve as a technical advisor and mentor to CHAI’s regional and country teams working with national malaria and NTD programs
• Review and contribute to surveillance and analytics components of annual country work plans to ensure they meet strategic goals
• Contribute to the formulation, review, and provide feedback on technical deliverables, which may include strategic plans, guidelines and standard operating procedures, analysis plan, grant proposals, donor reporting, or implementation update.
• Represent CHAI at external technical meetings with international and local academic and technical partners
• Formulate and conduct high quality epidemiological analyses to evaluate effectiveness of current interventions, understand disease pattern, and inform strategic planning
• Monitor, evaluate, and improve the performance of malaria and NTD surveillance processes and platforms, and contribute to the formulation of surveillance guidelines
• Design, implementation, analysis, and dissemination of operational research projects evaluating program or intervention effectiveness
• Support design and routine implementation of monitoring and evaluation of CHAI and governmental programs
• Promote the routine use of epidemiological, entomological, and programmatic data and analysis to inform country strategy planning and program implementation
• Synthesize results, translate them to national and sub-national government partners to support evidence-based decision making, and disseminate findings through high-quality presentations, reports, and scientific publications
• Manage surveillance and analytics staff and workstreams related to malaria and NTDs to support evidence-based decisions across various technical areas (e.g., vector control, case management, surveillance, finance), including technical mentorship, supervision, guidance, and training for a small technical team
• Manage internal communications between surveillance and analytic staff and other technical and operational CHAI teams
• Develop and manage strong working relationships with key stakeholders across government, non-governmental organizations, and regional academic institutions working on relevant data analysis and surveillance activities
• Provide technical supervision, mentorship and ad-hoc programmatic support to staff members involved in epidemiological activities
• Develop capacity building material and approaches for knowledge management to coordinate surveillance and analytic activities and lesson sharing across teams, countries, and regions
• Other responsibilities as needed

• Masters in Public Health, Epidemiology or related field, or similar experience
• 7+ years of working experience related to the above responsibilities with increasing levels of responsibility and leadership
• Experience mentoring, managing and leading teams comprised of junior technical staff
• Demonstrated experience in managing multiple epidemiological projects across countries
• Enthusiasm for applying research methods to solve global health problems focusing on malaria and NTDs and/or other major global infectious disease concerns
• Enthusiasm for and exceptional skills for managing epidemiological data, conducting analysis of health data, and using analyses for decision-making, including experience with statistical and geospatial analysis (e.g., expertise with R, SAS, STATA, GIS and/or other relevant software)
• High levels of proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and internet applications
• Experience with designing, conducting, and analyzing epidemiological surveys
• Experience in evaluating, working with, and strengthening national disease surveillance systems
• Experience in working and communicating with government officials and other external partners
• Exceptional written and oral communication skills, and proficiency in report writing and other concise written communications, including list of peer-reviewed publications and peer-reviewed experience
• Ability to work independently in remote and unstructured settings and to adapt to new environments and challenges, and ability to collaborate and operate as part of a multicultural team
• Willingness to travel extensively (up to 50 %)
• Fluency in French and English
