Org. Setting and Reporting

The position is located in the Regional Office for West and Central Africa (ROSEN) of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Dakar, Senegal. The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Programme Coordinator (Sahel Region) and the overall supervision of the UNODC Regional Representative for West and Central Africa (ROSEN).

Responsibilities

The incumbent will contribute to the implementation of the UNODC Sahel Programme and, in particular, the UNODC project “Supporting the increased and meaningful participation of women in the G5 Sahel Joint Force (G5SJF/PC) Police component to facilitate community engagement”, hereafter referred as “Women Provosts of the Sahel” and contribute to developing and implementing gender projects under the Sahel Programme.

Within assigned authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following specific duties:

• Contribute to the implementation of the Women Provosts of the Sahel project workplan and necessary amendments, in coordination with the project stakeholders and the other members of the Sahel Programme.
• Provide substantive support in the conceptualization of the project’s activities.
• Provide substantive and logistical support at events, such as meetings and conferences, related to the project implementation.
• Assist in guiding UNODC personnel and consultants implementing the Women Provosts of the Sahel project, and closely liaise with the relevant UNODC country offices.
• Undertake outreach activities and participate in presentations on assigned topics/activities.
• Participate in field missions, which include provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties, and drafting of mission summaries, and other related reports.
• Coordinate activities related to substantive and financial reporting and prepare related documents/reports (such as progress reports work programme, programme budget).
• Monitor the substantive progress and results of the Women Provosts of the Sahel project activities and produce analytical reports based on monitoring data.
• Assist in drafting periodic reports, updates and advocacy materials related to the Women Provosts of the Sahel project implementation for donors and external audiences.
• Prepare/draft various written outputs, e.g. background papers, correspondence with governments, briefing notes, presentations, project proposals, regular and ad hoc reports, etc.
• Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Education

An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in criminal law, international law, political science, international relations, business administration or a related area is required. A first-level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A first-level university degree and no experience will be accepted for candidates who have passed the United Nations Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP), the United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P).

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of professional experience at the international level in crime prevention, technical cooperation, programme management or public administration OR the successful completion of the Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP), the United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P) is required.

Work experience in programme/project formulation, development, implementation, and monitoring is required.

Work experience in developing and/or implementing initiatives/projects on gender is required

Work experience on security/law enforcement projects is desirable.

Work experience in the United Nations system or a similar international organization is desirable.

Work experience in West Africa and/or the Sahel region is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English and French is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise and a competency based-interview.

Special Notice

This temporary position is available for a period of nine months. Actual filling of this position and actual duration of the assignment is subject to availability of funding. If the selected candidate is an internal staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection may be administered as a temporary assignment.

While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.

Staff members of the United Nations common system organizations who will reach the mandatory age of separation or retirement within the duration of the current temporary need period are not eligible to apply.
