Organizational Setting

The Plant Production and Protection Division (NSP) enables the transition to MORE efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable plant production and protection through optimization and minimization. This requires the integration and harmonization of all appropriate crop production policies and practices in order to increase production in a sustainable manner in order to eradicate hunger while preserving the natural resources and environment for future use.

The post is located at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, in the Ecosystem Approach to Crop Production Intensification (NSPED) team, one of six teams in NSP. NSPED provides technical support, guidance and advice to countries aimed at sustainably increasing crop production taking an integrated, agro-ecological approach, harnessing eco-system services and promoting soil health and fertility.

Reporting Lines
The Agricultural Officer reports to the Senior Agricultural Officer/Team Leader of the Ecosystem Approach to Crop Production Intensification (NSPED) team.

Technical Focus
Maintaining and enhancing ecosystem services as essential components of agroecology to contribute to the transformation towards sustainable agricultural and food systems through an integrated approach to environmental, social and economic challenges.

Key Results
Research, technical analysis, and project related services to support the delivery of programme projects, products and services.

Key Functions
• Researches and analyses technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional and technology related information, data and statistics and/or related policy issues to support the delivery of programme projects, products and services.
• Produces a variety of technical information, data, statistics and reports as well as input for technical documents and web pages.
• Provides technical support/analysis to various assessments, studies and initiatives and provides technical backstopping to field projects.
• Collaborates in the development of improved/updated tools, systems, processes and databases.
• Participates in multi-disciplinary teams and/or leads working groups/teams collaborates with other divisions and agencies on work groups and committees and promotes best practices.
• Collaborates in, provides technical backstopping to and ensures the quality/effectiveness of capacity development activities within Member Countries such as policy support, organizational development and individual learning events including preparation of related information, learning materials and on-line tools.
• Promotes knowledge sharing and best practices at international meetings and conferences and influences partners in stakeholder consultations.
• Supports resource mobilization activities in accordance with the FAO Corporate Strategy.


Specific Functions
• Participates in the development, implementation and monitoring of programmes and projects related to agroecology, ecosystem services and pollinators.
• Provides policy and technical support related to sustainable management of ecosystem services and pollinators in support of resilient production systems, particularly for smallholders and family farmers.
• Designs and conducts awareness creation tools and material, analyses scientific information, maintains networks and promotes co-creation of knowledge related to ecosystem services and local agro-biodiversity as essential elements of agroecology.
• Contributes to FAO's work on agroecology, agricultural biodiversity and ecosystem services including under the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and in collaboration with other external stakeholders including UN Agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) involved in food systems transformation through agroecology.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements
• Advanced university degree in Crop Science, Agronomy, or Agroecology, with emphasis on integrated and diversified production systems including crop production, agroforestry, crop-livestock systems, biodiversity, pollinators management, social processes for transformation towards sustainable agricultural production and food systems.
• Five years of relevant experience in one or more of the following areas: agroecology, ecosystem management, sustainable agricultural production systems.
• Working knowledge (proficient - Level C) of English and limited knowledge (intermediate - Level B) of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).

• Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions;
• Extent of work in policy and international mechanisms or organizations related to agroecology, ecosystem services and pollinators;
• Extent and relevance of experience in sustainable management of ecosystem services, agrobiodiversity, and agroecological food systems with special focus on smallholder farming systems;
• Ability to analyse information as the basis for technical and policy advice for governments and inputs to international and intergovernmental fora, programmes, goals;
• Capacity to express the transformative spirit of agroecology and work through an integrated approach on complex and diversified and integrated sustainable agricultural production systems that sustain food security and nutrition.
