Organizational Setting

FAO mandate in Georgia is to support national efforts to promote food security and sustainable development of agricultural sector. FAO priorities in Georgia reflect the objectives and priorities of the Government set in the strategy papers related to agricultural development. In essence FAO assists the Government in creating and implementing an institutional, legal and regulatory environment. At the same time, FAO supports individuals working in agriculture – farmers, cooperatives, companies etc. by providing technical and financial assistance.


Reporting Lines

The International Cover Crop Management Specialist shall operate under the overall responsibility of FAO Representative in Georgia, the direct supervision of the FAO Programme Coordinator, and the technical supervision of the Senior Agronomist of the Programme, and in close collaboration with the rest of the ENPARD team and other colleagues in the FAO Office in Georgia.


Technical Focus

The extension programme of FAO is providing technical assistance to farmers through peer-to-peer learning. The Extension component is disseminating knowledge through in situ trainings and field demonstrations. The International Cover Crop Management Specialist will provide technical support to the Extension component in term of cover crop management in the context of dairy livestock feed, soil regeneration, crop rotation, release of macronutrients to subsequent crops.


Tasks and responsibilities

• Provide technical support to the Extension Program in term of cover crops:
• Support the design of annual plan for cover crop demonstrations and trials with different technical distinct focuses: cover crops in grape vine management, intercropping, crop rotation, fodder crops and animal nutrition, silage production, soil biological fertility improvement, soil regeneration and/or pest management.
• Determine options to cover crops species-advantages and disadvantages according to the climate, orchard/vineyard species/varieties and the soils.
• Determine the need, equipment and timing for tilling for different cover crop species based on local conditions such as humidity, rain, soil type, etc.
• Oversee and guide agricultural works for cover crops in sowing, mowing, disposal and utilisation for soil improvement or livestock nutrition. Provide recommendations on use of herbicide when cover crops is not an option.
• Determine options to cover crops/fodder species-advantages and disadvantages according to the climate, nutritional purpose and soils. How to execute cover crop/pasture trials (grasses, legumes and broadleaf non-legumes crops) in the context of improved dairy livestock feed and soil protection.
• Contribute to the design of the Monitoring and Technical Evaluation Plan that will allow to measure the benefit of appropriate cover crop management.
• Provide technical support to the Extension Program in term of Animal Nutrition Improvement through more balanced diets, including grazing cover crops and forage crops.
• Provide backstopping to the teams on a regular basis by video calls and visits Georgia under a joint plan of the different projects.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

• University degree in Agronomy, Livestock production or similar, including technical specialisations.
• 5 years of experience in sustainable agriculture practices with a focus on cover crops
• Working knowledge (Level C) of English and limited knowledge (level B) in other FAO official language. For PSA, working knowledge of one FAO language at level C is required.
