Senior Programme Officer - Demand Reduction, STW

BACKGROUND
TRAFFIC is the leading non-governmental organization working globally on trade in wild animals and plants in the context of both biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

TRAFFIC International is a charity and limited company registered in the UK. TRAFFIC’s head office, based in Cambridge UK, provides worldwide leadership, coordination, cross-regional and corporate functions. TRAFFIC’s local engagement is managed through programme offices operating under the auspices of the UK charity, with staff based in a hub office and at other strategic locations where necessary. Programme offices operate within a geographic area of responsibility focused on one or multiple countries where TRAFFIC aims to help deliver priority programme outcomes. TRAFFIC works in strategic alliance with IUCN and WWF on wildlife trade issues.

Project Background

The “Saving Threatened Wildlife (STW)” project will be implemented over 5-year from June 2021 to July 2026. The project works to help Vietnam control and stop the current and increasingly serious situation of wildlife trafficking. It aims to increase Viet Nam’s leadership in countering wildlife trafficking by enhancing the commitment of Government of Vietnam (GVN) leaders at the national and provincial levels, increasing the effectiveness of wildlife law enforcement, and reducing the demand and consumption of illegal wildlife products. The project was awarded to WWF and will be implemented in collaboration with TRAFFIC.

TRAFFIC will lead the implementation of practical and effective approaches to significantly reduce the demand for illegal wildlife product consumption and will work with WWF and the Center for Nature Education (ENV) to strengthen Viet Nam’s systems and capacities to deter those involved in the illegal wildlife trade. The technical implementation team, lead by WWF’s Deputy Chief of Party, provides a combination of experience combating wildlife trafficking and the proven ability to reduce demand for consumption, improve enforcement of trafficking, and strengthen policy formulation and governance for combating wildlife trade in Viet Nam.
