Our team and mission

The Industrial Policy and Auditing Department is responsible for fostering the relations between industry and the Agency,  for elaborating and implementing the Agency’s industrial policy, for defining and implementing the geographical return and industrial audit policies, for working closely with Member States on the achievement of their industrial policy goals and for supporting the successful accession of new Member and Cooperating States.

 

The Capability & Country Support Division, Industrial Policy and Auditing Department, based at ESTEC, is responsible for implementing integration measures for the New Member States, Associate States, and Cooperating States in cooperation with Programme Directorates and the ESA Technical Directorate.

The Division manages in particular the Incentive Schemes and RPA Schemes which aim at developing and reinforcing sustainable industrial and academic capabilities in the space domain in these countries, through technology development contracts, selected through specific Calls for Activities, on topics related to ESA’s overall future programmes activities.

Field(s) of activity for the internship

You can choose between the following topics:

 

1) Topic 1: Support Digitalisation of Industrial Data, Business Automation Development and Support to Country Desk Officers

As an intern, you will contribute to the following fields:

 

Digitalisation of Industrial Data and Business Automation Development:

Optimisation of processes of industrial incentive schemes, digitalisation and automation in support of the implementation of calls, as well as management of activities will play a major part. For this, you will work closely with the project controllers and the Capability & Country Support Division. The environment in which this takes place is Microsoft SharePoint. Required and beneficial experience and knowledge are described below.

 

Support to Country Desk Officer:

As part of your tasks, you will also be assisting in updating the reviewer database application, as well as streamlining its user interface and the developer of the application. The reviewer database is meant to support a sub-process of Tender Evaluation run by the Division schemes. Furthermore, you will also be asked to contribute to the improvement of Companies Database in close cooperation with the respective team members. The Companies Database supports entity management and technical capabilities mapping and serves the Country Desk Officers in finding links between Industries and Academia across borders.

 

2) Topic 2: Event management, outreach and coordination support for NMS/AM/PECS

As an intern, you will contribute to the process of managing industry events, conferences, trainings and briefings. You will also work on improving internal knowledge and awareness of the work of the team inside ESA and helping to ensure coordinated actions. 

 

For events in general, you will be asked to perform administrative and logistical tasks concerning event organisation such as: Contacting and coordinating with speakers, registering attendees, supporting booking event spaces and ordering required supplies and communicating with other ESA staff and directorates.

 

In May 2023, a large conference for entities of ESA New Members, Associate Members and Cooperating States will be held at ESTEC. You may be asked to assist in the organisation of this, from which activities will include:

  • Contacting and coordinating with industry, LSIs and ESA technical officers
  • Coordinating professional events (including registration, tours at ESTEC facilities, presentation sessions and training courses)
  • Coordinating social events

 

You will develop and execute  an internal communication and outreach plan for raising the awareness of the Division's activities with other programmes and projects inside ESA.

Education

You must have student status and be enrolled at university for the entire duration of the internship. You should preferably be in your final or second to last year of a university course at master’s level in a technical or scientific discipline.

Additional requirements

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.

 

Educational knowledge:

 

1) Topic 1:

Education in Engineering, Computer Science or Science is preferred, knowledge of and experience in other tools and programming languages is considered beneficial.

Experience in (one of) the following tools is required:

  • Frontend stack (HTML/CSS/JS)
  • MS Excel (including VBA Macros)
  • Python for data processing and automation
  • BI software (Tableau/PowerBI)

 

2) Topic 2:
Knowledge and background in International Relations, Communication and/or Business Administration is preferred.
