Field(s) of activity for the internship

Topic: Benchmark of Propulsion test facilities

After having understood how is built an Engine test facility, the intern will perform benchmark between the different existing test facilities around the world. The benchmark concerns technical and economical datas, and the facility governance schemes. The benchmark encompasses:

  • Bibliographical research
  • Internet research
  • Contact with internal ESA staff
  • Contact with test facilities owners
  • Presentation of results to internal ESA management, and to national delegations
  • Participation to the strategic vision of future ESA engine test facilities

What are the means which are installed on these Benches and how do they look like? What are the “new” technologies?
What type of tests do they propose? (sea level or/and altitude?, which propellants (LOX-Methan? Green Storable?;….) ; equipment level (turbopump; injection chambers….)
What type of engines are integrated in the small European Launchers from RFA, ISAR, PLD,….? What is the thrust range they need to test ?
What are the test benches exploitation costs?
What is the NRC for the Test Bench Development and installation? Who (government, industry…) did invest?
Identification of potential customers for ESA engine test facilities
Identification of « Start-up » Rocket Engine Test Benches in the World and in particular in Europe (Teruel, Kiruna, ….). What level of finalisation of the bench (operational, in progress)?
