Overview of position

Our Client is an operational arm of the United Nations, supporting the successful implementation of its partners’ peacebuilding, humanitarian and development projects around the world. Our mission is to help people build better lives and countries achieve sustainable development.

Our Client areas of expertise cover infrastructure, procurement, project management, financial management and human resources.

The translator will provide support to the communications team to translate documents and visibility materials as well as proof reading and linguistic editing for our client website.

The main objective of this TOR is to hire a short-term Translator who shall translate and proofread different documents from English to Arabic or vice versa under several projects. Translator shall work under Our Client Communications Officer to achieve the objective and the scope of the assignment.


Role objectives

Description of Responsibilities

He/she will be responsible for translating internal and external materials, providing a rapid turnaround and ensuring the quality assurance of English and Arabic documents. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Translate mainly from English into Arabic or vice versa a wide variety of documents and technical materials:

  • Maintaining a high standard of accuracy, consistency, and faithfulness to the spirit, style, register and nuance of the original text.

  • Ensuring timeliness, undertaking a rapid turnaround for translation tasks that need immediate use.

  • Producing self-revised translations.

  • Ensuring that our client website content is available in English and Arabic.

  • Supporting our client presence in Arabic -English on institutional social media platforms (YouTube,Twitter, etc.)

Quality Assurance

  • Support in evaluating the quality and accuracy of translations provided in English and Arabic by other translators, and revise their work as required.

  • Collaborate with other English -Arabic translators to ensure the highest language standards and consistency.

Terminology:

  • Assist in undertaking linguistic and background research and verify terminology and references in order to ensure consistency of vocabulary and established terms.

  • Support in keeping abreast of institutional terminology and, when necessary, liaise with subject matter experts to ensure accurate use of technical terms.

  • Suggest updates to the computerized terminology files and institutional translation memories.

  • Provide advice on the use of Arabic in the organizational context.

  • Perform other related duties as required.

  • Final Product Tasks should be completed as stated in the duties listed above.

Further information
  • Must be graduated BA in translation required or equivalent.

  • At least 2 years of translation experience from English to Arabic and vice versa required.

  • Experience in the context of UN or another international organization an asset.

  • Strong MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and/or Google Suite skills (Docs, Slides, Sheet, etc.)

  • Native-level speaker of Arabic and perfect command of English required.
