The Copernicus Ground Segment is implemented based on a service-based architecture that relies on cloud technology to optimise the scalability and performance of the Copernicus Space Component operations. In this context, ESA implements and maintains the operational data processors used within the Copernicus Ground Segment for the generation of Sentinel Level-0, Level-1 and Level-2 data.

If selected for this position, you will be responsible for defining, implementing, maintaining and developing the operational Level-0 and Level-1 data processors for the Copernicus missions, seeking to optimise their operations in cloud-based and HPC environments, as well as to optimise the structure and definition of the output products to ease their exploitation in these environments.

Duties

You will report to the Head of Copernicus and Copernicus Ground Segment Systems Section and be assigned the following initial duties:

  • Providing expertise, defining, procuring and managing the relevant implementation activities on the evolution of the Copernicus Sentinel products, while aiming to ease access to and the exploitation of the products in cloud-based and HPC environments;
  • Managing the procurement activities for the maintenance and re-engineering of the Copernicus Sentinel Level-0 and Level-1 data processing software, leading to ready-to-use cloud-optimised data processors;
  • Preparing the operational implementation of the future operational Level-0 and Level-1 data processors for the future Copernicus Expansion and Next Generation missions and managing the related procurement activities;
  • Defining and maintaining, in coordination with the Copernicus Ground Segment System team, the technical documentation baseline related to the Copernicus mission data processing and data products as part of the overall Copernicus Ground Segment technical baseline;
  • Helping to prepare the integration of the Copernicus Expansion and Next Generation missions in the Copernicus Ground Segment operations framework;
  • Supporting the Copernicus Ground Segment Managers in preparing future Copernicus mission operations;
  • Interacting and coordinating with the DestinE teams for matters related to data formats, data access and exploitation to streamline, in particular, their usage for simulation, modelling and AI-related applications in the context of DestinE;
  • Interacting with the Copernicus Space Segment teams from the early phases of the Copernicus Expansion and Next Generation Space Segment activities for matters related to payload data processing.
