Department Description


The LABADMINOSH Branch is responsible for strengthening workplace compliance through labour inspection and promoting awareness of the dimensions and consequences of occupational fatalities, injuries and diseases and to provide support to ILO constituent efforts to improve national occupational health capacity and programmes that foster a preventative safety and health culture. Its mission is to develop national plans for strengthening the institutional and human capacity of inspectorates and to support constituents in implementing occupational safety and health prevention and compliance in the workplace; knowledge development, management and dissemination that meets the needs of governments, employers and workers including international standards, national legislation, technical guidance, methodologies, strategies, statistics, best practices, and education and training. The LABADMINOSH Branch supports action at international, regional and national levels to promote prevention and enforcement mechanisms to improve working conditions.

 

The internship is with the Strategic Compliance and Innovation cluster of the LABADMIN/OSH Branch, which leads the implementation ILO’s Approach to Strategic Compliance Planning for Labour Inspectorates and coordinate the Transformative Technology for Decent Work initiative.  

Learning Area

 

The intern will be working with specialists who are involved in policy and technical advice to ministries of labour, social partners and other actors within labour administration and occupational safety and health systems on governance issues. He/She will be exposed to a range of areas such as labour inspection and compliance strategies, with a focus on the use of transformative technology and innovative practices to enhance compliance outcomes. The intern will gain knowledge about the design of capacity building materials such as training tools, organization of technical meetings, seminars, and workshops, and gain experience in conducting comparative research on labour administration, labour inspection, innovation in compliance, and occupational safety and health. 

 

Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks. 

Education

The candidate should be enrolled in their final year of graduate degree programme or should have completed such a programme no longer than 1 year ago. Areas of studies include  Law, Political Science, Economics, Public Policy, Computer Science, or related fields. 

Experience

Any relevant work experience and knowledge of labour law compliance and the enforcement of labour law standards, public regulatory institutions and of emerging technologies such as blockchain, IoT, predictive analytics and/or data analysis would be an advantage. Strong writing and research skills, demonstrated experience in working with technology, knowledge of/experience working with international labour standards.

Languages

Good command of English is required. Working knowledge of French, Spanish or Arabic would be an additional asset. 

Competencies

Applicants should be able to adapt to an international, multicultural and multilingual environment, have good communication skills, and be able to work in teams.

Additional requirements

Strong writing and research skills, demonstrated experience in working with technology, knowledge of/experience working with international labour standards.

Selection process:

 

Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HRD), hiring departments will short-list applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected by any department for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster. 

 

If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the hiring department for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, e-mail, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.

 

Stipend:

 

As an intern in Geneva, you will receive a stipend of 2450 CHF per month from the ILO, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive 2450 CHF per month. Your travel to Geneva will be at your own expense.

 

Insurance:

 

Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).
