Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations General Assembly resolution 71/251 established the Technology Bank for the Least Developed Countries and adopted its Charter on 23 December 2016.

The objectives of the Technology Bank are :
(a) To strengthen the science, technology and innovation capacity of least developed countries, including the capacity to identify, absorb, develop, integrate and scale up the deployment of technologies and innovations, including indigenous ones, as well as the capacity to address and manage intellectual property rights issues;
(b) To promote the development and implementation of national and regional science, technology and innovation strategies;
(c) To strengthen partnerships among science, technology and innovation-related public entities and with the private sector;
(d) To promote cooperation among all stakeholders involved in science, technology and innovation, including researchers, research institutions and public and private sector entities, within and between least developed countries, as well as with their counterparts in other countries;
(e) To promote and facilitate the identification and utilization of and access to appropriate technologies by the least developed countries, as well as their transfer to the least developed countries, while respecting intellectual property rights and fostering the national and regional capacity of the least developed countries for the effective utilization of technology in order to bring about transformative change.

The position is located in the Project Design, Capacity Building and Communications Unit, UNTBLDC, Gebze.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Research Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:
•Assists in identifying and monitoring substantive aspect of the work of the unit. Selects and evaluates a variety of documents, summarizes pertinent material, collects and analyses data and prepares background materials for assessment papers, studies, briefs and reports in the area of social development with specific focus on gender equality.
•Systematically follows through and retrieves, highlights and compiles information from a wide variety of information sources; prepares input for the electronic database and the internet and co-operate with research institutes and organizations in the collection of data.
•Assembles and examines original statistical material to ensure accuracy, clarity and validity; makes appropriate adjustments.
Prepares a variety of reports, presentations, tables, lists, charts, data sets, and/or diagrams for information in order to facilitate the in-depth analysis of the retrieved information by the supervisor and other users.
•Prepares abstracts/bibliographic descriptions for inclusion in documents, articles, books and publications.
•Maintains and expands contacts with other departments in the UN Secretariat, as well as the UN agencies and programmes and other organizations relevant to the region, and co-ordinates the input of other departments in the collection of data for assignments received.
•Prepares, maintains and updates files (electronic and paper) and internal databases; designs and generates a variety of periodic and ad hoc reports, statistical tables, charts, graphs, and other background materials/notes to facilitate inspection and other reviews.
•Drafts programme/project summaries, co-ordinates review and clearance process and co-ordinates with editor, translation services, etc., on finalization and publication of reports in multiple languages.
•Identifies the organizational requirements for conferences and meetings and assists in the preparation of documentation and reports for these meetings.
Attends a variety of meetings to follow discussions, takes notes and prepares summary reports, notes for the file, executive summaries, correspondence, etc.
•Assists senior staff with maintaining records and proper filing of activities related to resource mobilization, communication and outreach.
•Assists substantive officers with tasks related to programme management and administrative/logistic arrangements
Performs other related work as required.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Work Experience

At least five (5) years of experience in collecting and researching data across various areas of social and economic development or related area is required.

Five years responsible experience in research activities for technology related projects is required .

Experience in data analytics and information management in the UN Common System is desirable.

Experience within the UN Common System is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.

Appointment to this post is limited to service within the UN-TBLDC. TBLDC is an independent UN entity to the UN Secretariat; candidates been recommended through this Job Opening will not be rostered by UN Secretariat.

The appointment or assignment against this position is for an initial period of one year. The appointment or assignment and renewal thereof are subject to the availability of the post or funds, budgetary approval or extension of the mandate.
