ACAPS, a project hosted by the Norwegian Refugee Council, is looking for a dynamic Data Engineer to join its Data Analytics team in Geneva.

OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE 

The data engineer will support the ACAPS Natural Language Processing (NLP) project. ACAPS is developing a new tool to facilitate and speed up data collection of humanitarian indicators. The data engineer will support the development of the new NLP tool, working closely with the software development team. 

We are looking for a dynamic data engineer that will support the development of new and established data infrastructure within ACAPS. 

 Tasks and responsibilities 

    • Contribute to development of machine learning models focusing on natural language processing and understanding 
    • Create and maintain optimal data pipeline architecture in the domain of natural language processing and other analytical products 
    • Employ a variety of languages and tools (e.g., scripting languages) to marry existing analytical systems together 
    • Work with data scientists and product manager across the software lifecycle of products, including machine learning pipelines with a focus on natural language processing 
    • Build the infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources using ‘big data’ technologies, e.g., AWS/Azure cloud services 
    • Integrate new data management technologies and software engineering tools into existing structures 
    • Deliver high-quality, robust, and optimized code solutions 
    • Maintain and improve the data management system 
    • Ensure that data validation processes, data quality control standards, and testing strategies are consistently applied 
    • Advice on the choice of product and/or service provider more suitable for specific projects 
    • Recommend ways to improve data reliability, efficiency, quality, and proper storage 
    • Support and troubleshoot data and/or system issues as needed 
    • Contribute to knowledge sharing and training of the rest of the team 
    • Work with the product manager to develop governance processes for managing services (version control), support services, service migration, monitoring and evaluation of services. 
    • Document definitions for all new data constructs. 
    • Research new database technologies and recommend solutions in order to improve performance, scalability, & storage. 

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS 

This position will closely collaborate with developers, data scientists, data analysts, and the global analysis team of ACAPS. 

 REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS 

Qualifications and experience  

    • Post-graduate qualification in Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Management or Statistics. Other degrees with relevant experience may be considered.  
    • At least 1 year of proven working experience on a similar role or an internship. 
    • Proficiency in programming with Python with a focus on machine learning libraries (e.g. TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch, Scikit-learn) 
    • Experience implementing end-to-end machine learning projects. Experience with natural language processing is a plus (e.g. NLTK, SpaCy, TextBlob, Gensim)
    • Familiarity with Docker 
    • Familiarity with Git 
    • Experience with data stores such as Hadoop, Amazon S3, relational databases, Azure BLOB, Azure Data Lake store, and MS Azure DW 
    • Familiarity with database design development, data mining, data visualisation.  
    • Fluent written and oral communication skills in English.
