Department Description

LABADMIN/OSH assists member States in improving OSH policies, systems and services as well as to strengthen and modernize labour administration and inspection. It promotes an exchange of good practices and initiatives to improve labour administration and inspection and OSH; it undertakes research on relevant topics, designs and manages relevant technical cooperation projects, including provision of technical advice, drafting and revising labour administration, inspection and OSH law and country profiles.

The Occupational Safety and Health team works on a broad portfolio, including biological risks, physical and ergonomic risks, sound chemical management, psychosocial risks and workplace health promotion. The team provides technical guidance to constituents, produces technical reports and is involved in global multilateral engagements concerning topics pertaining to OSH. This includes, notably the annual World Day for Safety and Health at Work campaign, hosting the Global Coalition on Safety and Health at Work, involvement in interagency working groups and task forces, among other various engagements. The team also supports various technical cooperation projects on OSH being implemented globally and in partnership with ILO field offices.   

Learning Area

Within the LABADMIN/OSH Branch focusing on occupational safety and health, the intern will be exposed to a whole range of areas of work such as biological, chemical, physical, ergonomic and psychosocial risks in the world of work. This will include tasks such as conducting literature searches, data collection and analysis and working to support activities in a variety of these occupational health risks. The intern will work with specialists involved in developing global reports and research, organising promotional campaigns and backstopping projects in a number of countries in the world. The intern will also gain exposure in regards to the tripartite governance structure of the ILO and its engagement in multilateral working groups and task forces related to OSH. 

The specific duties consist of the following: 
•    Support activities in relation to the Global Coalition for Safety and Health at Work.

•    Engage in communication activities in relation to the World Day for Safety and Health at Work 

•    Support multilateral engagements regarding OSH with other international organisations and stakeholders.  

•    Prepare PowerPoints, fact sheets, briefs and short reports in the area of OSH as applicable.

•    Undertake any other related task as requested by the supervisor or Branch Chief. 


This position will be under the supervision and guidance of a Senior OSH Specialist.

Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.

Education

The candidate should be enrolled in their final year of graduate degree programme or should have completed such a programme no longer than 1 year ago. Areas of studies include occupational safety and health, public health, health and policy, health communication, occupational psychology, social sciences or a related field.

Experience

Relevant work or research experience in the area of occupational safety and health, occupational health law, public health, occupational psychology would be an asset.  Experience creating, modifying and updating websites would be an advantage 

Languages

Working (both oral and written) knowledge of at least one of the ILO’s official languages (English, French and Spanish). Knowledge of a second ILO official language would be an asset.

Competencies

Adaptable to an international, multicultural and multilingual environment, good communication skills and ability to work in a team.

Selection process:

 

Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HRD), hiring departments will short-list applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected by any department for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster. 

 

If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the hiring department for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, e-mail, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.

 

Stipend:

 

As an intern in Geneva, you will receive a stipend of 2450 CHF per month from the ILO, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive 2450 CHF per month. Your travel to Geneva will be at your own expense.

 

Insurance:

 

Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).
