Org. Setting and Reporting

The positions are in the Organizational Development Section. An initial internship contract will be for three months with an opportunity for an extension to a maximum of six months, depending on the needs of the department.¿

The internships are UNPAID and full-time. Interns normally work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a Staff Development Officer, and typically work as a team of interns who support various projects throughout the Section and Division.

The Organizational Development Section within the Office of Human Resources (OHR), Department of Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance (DMSPC), of the United Nations in New York is seeking interns who are interested in joining a very dynamic and international office that is mandated to identify and respond to Organizational learning and development needs.¿¿

To address an ongoing need, we are seeking several interns specializing in a range of areas including Communications, Marketing, Visual Design, Data Visualization, Video Production, Instructional Design, Knowledge Management, Diversity and Inclusion, Human Resources, Finance and budgeting, and/or other fields such as Industrial/Organizational/Occupational Psychology.

Projects and programmes for which selected interns would support include:

(a) Global Orientation to the United Nations – a programme to ensure that all newcomers get the information and support they need, when they most need it.

(b) LIDERA – a community for staff to share knowledge, tips and best practices on leadership through discussions, events and other activities, in-person and online.

(c) United to Respect – a learning programme that aims to ensure a harmonious workplace that prevents and, if need be, responds well to prohibited conduct.

(d) Mobility – a new approach for encouraging staff to take on new roles laterally in a variety of functions, contexts and duty stations.

(e) Together Mentoring and Networking Programme- enables UN system staff to identify and contact colleagues they’d like to network with or be mentored by.

(f) UN Career Journey Podcast – in partnership with UNDP, and produced for UN staff, this includes stories and perspectives of UN colleagues across the globe, about their life and work experiences and how the UN makes a difference.

(g) UN Values and Behaviours to implement a culture change project across the UN Secretariat focused on Senior Leader engagement, communication and outreach, learning and development and reviews of processes and procedures.

(h) Learning Budget team support – assisting with financial updates and processes.

We are seeking to build a team of interns who each have skills and/or interests in supporting these and other projects in one or more of the following ways:

A. Provide administrative support¿
- Coordinate and assist with meetings (sending invites, taking notes, etc.)¿¿
- Manage correspondence with clients and stakeholders¿.
- Design and maintain spreadsheets
- Serve as “scrum leader” to implement agile project management
- Assist with recruitment (e.g. desk reviews of applications, interviews, etc.)
- Organize files and folders for efficient knowledge management

B. Conduct and present research and data¿
- Research, compile, draft and edit basic information.
- Help draft reports with quantitative or qualitative research and analysis.¿
- Plan, implement, and record results of focus groups or consultations.¿
- Plan and design forms and surveys for effective data collection.
- Design and develop effective sharing of data for specific audiences.

C. Contribute to communication and marketing campaigns for multilingual audiences
- Draft, edit and revise various written documents (FAQs, guidance, etc.)
- Write and edit articles in English for UN Intranet (internal audience)
- Coordinate with a graphic designer to develop and design infographics
- Write and edit scripts for videos, webinars and learning experiences
- Write and edit content and “alt text” for websites and online learning '
- Help to plan communication guidance, strategies and campaigns
- Translate English texts or work with texts drafted in another UN language: French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian or
Spanish.

D. Design and develop visuals, videos, and online learning experiences
- Design graphics aligned with branding (e.g. icons, bullets, user interface)
- Apply branding to design documents (e.g. PPTs, forms, info briefs, reports)
- Integrate best practices for disability inclusion and accessibility.
- Help develop and design infographics
- Plan, produce and edit short videos for learning activities and marketing
- Help design and develop interactive learning activities and quizzes
- Create other marketing and promotional products

E. Support community or social media management, and implementing events
- Plan, write and respond to posts to encourage online engagement
- Contribute to strategic planning for online community engagement, communication campaigns, and impactful
learning experiences.
- Help plan and implement webinars, round tables, online discussions, book clubs, and other special events.

As part of this work, you will be asked to use various software and tools, learning how to use them, if necessary. ¿

On completion of the internship, the candidate will have gained:¿
- An excellent understanding of the UN Secretariat, its structure and work;¿
- Knowledge of the challenges of communications and/or organizational learning in a multicultural environment within
an inter-governmental context;
- Writing and/or designing graphics for public information and communications in an international context;¿
- Extensive exposure to managers and other personnel of the UN Secretariat and throughout the UN System. ¿

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations New York Headquarters Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

1) Applicants must:

(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or;
(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).

2) Be computer literate in standard software applications including MS Suite (Word, Excel);

3) Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

4) Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

5) Be familiar and interested in international relations and equal representation of women and gender mainstreaming. ¿

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Experience with Office 365 applications and features is desirable.

Experience in the use of data visualization tools (e.g Power BI) is desirable.

Experience designing or developing interactive content for webinars, social media, or online courses is desirable.

Experience with video and audio editing or graphic design is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Special Notice

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. For internships in the United States of America, interns who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or not currently in the United States on a non-immigrant visa status will be required to obtain a G-4 visa. If already in the United States of America on another non-immigrant visa status other than G-4, interns will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and if required, employment authorization, allowing them to undertake the internship.
