Location – UK flexible – with some working from London office when required.

Why this role is important…

You’ll be vital in helping maintain the highest level of operational readiness and the agility required to provide Movement-wide surge support for those facing crisis internationally. You will not be deployed yourself but will manage a team that will be deployed anywhere in the world.

What you’ll be doing…

Leading a team of up to 8 deployable team members, you’ll ensure that the team is relevant in meeting the surge needs of both the British Red Cross and Movement partners (including relationship management with those partners), and that individual team members are performing effectively.

In addition, you’ll work with other teams (including HR and aligned technical teams) to ensure that the relevant regist ers (database of pre-vetted, deployable delegates) are functional, active, and reliable, and that the overall surge capacity offer provided to stakeholders is continuously improving and evolving to meet current and future needs. Together with the Senior Manager – Global Surge, you’ll work on further development of the cost recoverable, Movement-wide standing surge capacity, as well as  advocacy on the formation of similar capacity in other National Societies globally.

What you’ll bring to the role…

- Robust working knowledge of the international humanitarian system
- Technical expertise within surge deployments  and strong people management skills
- Building and maintaining partnerships and relationships.
- Good project management skills
- Strong team, networking, and collaboration skills
- Good financial management skills (including budgeting and reporting)
- Line management experience

About the team

The Global Surge Team is made up of a number of highly trained professionals ready to be deployed anywhere in the world at short notice. Each deployment is limited to a maximum of three months. We are part of the International Directorate at the British Red Cross. As a team we are deployed by the British Red Cross in support of the whole of the RCRC Movement. While we are often deployed to help in the immediate aftermath of an emergency, we provide support throughout the whole disaster management cycle: disaster risk reduction, preparedness, emergency response and emergency recovery.

Given the expertise of our team, we work with partner Red Cross societies to build their capacity and technical capabilities. We do this by developing, facilitating and delivering a range of technical learning and development programmes. And we invest in the development of our team: on average there is a one-month annual training allowance, and there are clear development plans for each role.

Closing date for applications is 23:59 (UK Time) on December 11th with interviews to take place the following week.

We offer a wide range of staff benefits, these include:
- 36 days holiday (inclusive of bank holidays)
- Option to buy an extra 5 days, annual leave
- Up to 6% contributory pension
- Flexible working policy
- Genuine investment in your development
