Organizational Setting

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations’ (FAO) Sub regional Office for the Pacific (SAP) covers Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Republic of Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. FAO SAP is responsible for developing, promoting, overseeing and implementing agreed strategies for addressing sub regional agriculture, food, nutrition and rural development priorities. FAO SAP develops and maintains relations with sub region-wide institutions including the Council of Regional Organizations in the Pacific (CROP). The Sub regional Office is a subsidiary of FAO’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP) in Bangkok.

Requested by the Government of Solomon Islands, FAO SAP developed the project “Strengthening local food systems (impacted by COVID-19) by promoting climate-resilient and sustainable urban and peri-urban agriculture value chains” to develop targeted technical assistance in collaboration with the Ministries of Agriculture and Livestock, Health and Medical Services, Education and Human Resources Development, Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology; and the Honiara City and Provincial Councils of selected islands.

Reporting Lines

Under the overall supervision of the FAO Sub-Regional Coordinator for Pacific (SRC), direct supervision of the Lead Technical Officer (LTO), and in collaboration with the Assistant FAO Representative in Solomon Islands, the International Post Management and Nutrition Consultant is expected to contribute to the make the Project successful and deliver the following tasks;

Technical Focus

• Provide technical, capacity building and managerial support to the Honiara Women Market Vendor Association (HWMVA), and selected vendors on post-harvest management processes that are relevant to Solomon Island’s local context. Also assist HCC (as the relevant authority) with HWMVA and the selected vendors in the implementation of these post-harvest management measures,
• Develop Post Harvest Management Strategy and training materials. Provide feedback on the contents of the workshops, and work with the National Agriculture Consultant to finalise all the necessary documents for the planned trainings and to ensure that there are successful learning outcomes.
• Develop Nutrition Strategy and training materials. Provide feedback on the contents of the workshops, and work with the National Agriculture Consultant to finalise all the necessary documents for the planning trainings and to ensure that they are successful learning outcomes.


Tasks and responsibilities

• Understand the Project Proposal, and develop a time bound work plan in consultation with the LTO, National Agriculture Consultant and relevant stakeholders to include technical support from the national staff and key partners to implement the project activities apart from direct delivery of tasks and training courses expected of you.
• Build the capacity of the HWMVA and selected vendors & schools on growing Nutrition Gardens that can produce a diverse range of nutrition foods that can be sold at the market. Provide technical, capacity building to selected schools to grow nutritious foods and produce healthy diets.
• Develop and deliver training events to provide technical support to selected market vendors and schools on post-harvest management strategies and delivering healthy diets.
• Conduct at least two post-harvest management and nutrition TOTs and establish a demonstration garden that will be the learning site for national stakeholders implementing the project.
• Liaise with the relevant government ministries (to name a few; Ministry of Health and Medical Services – MHMS) and Non-Government Organizations to understand the capacity needs for specific trainings.
• Maintain very active email communications with the National Agriculture Consultant and LTO on the delivery of this assignment and share periodic progress reports.
• Compile the Final Training Reports and recommendations for sustainable impact.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

• University degree in Food Technology, Food Science, Agriculture or any other relevant field
• 7 years of relevant experience in Food Technology, Food Science, Agriculture or any other relevant field
• Working knowledge (level C) of English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge (level B) of one of the other two or Arabic, Chinese, Russian. For PSA only one language level C is required.
