Mission and objectives

Istanbul International Center for Private Sector in Development (IICPSD) supports the private sector and foundations to become transformative partners in development through research, advocacy for inclusive business, facilitation of public-private dialogue and brokering partnerships. IICPSD, established in 2011 in partnership with the Government of Turkey, is one of UNDP's six Global Policy Centres. It leads UNDP’s global work on private sector and foundations and supports UNDP’s offices all over the world. The Center focuses on four thematic areas: 1. Inclusive Business; 2. Private Sector Engagement in Skills Development; 3. Impact investing; 4. Resilience and Crisis Response. The Center also hosts four global initiatives: Business Call to Action, SDG Philanthropy Platform, Global Islamic Finance and Impact Investing Platform and Connecting Business Initiative.

Context

OSDG is a joint initiative of IICPSD’s SDG AI Lab, PPMI and a growing community of researchers that aims at developing an open-source and transparent tool for classifying texts according to SDGs. The initiative brings together experts in the areas of Sustainable Development, Data Science and Digital Transformation to solve various SDG-related problems using cutting-edge tools and methodologies. To date, we have initiated work in three major areas, namely ontology building, data collection and machine learning.

Task description

Online volunteers will join a unique initiative on developing an open-source production-ready Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) classification tool. They will be invited to regularly participate in SDG 10 data annotation and text labelling exercises via a newly built Community Platform. The volunteers will be able to help us develop a common understanding of SDGs while deepening their own knowledge of the topic. The results of their work will not only improve the OSDG tool, but also enable international organisations, companies and academics around the world to advance their research on sustainability and help to more accurately define the contribution of various research fields to SDGs.
