Organizational Setting

The Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (RLC) promotes the eradication of hunger, food insecurity, malnutrition and extreme poverty by providing technical advice and assistance to member countries.
The position is located in the Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean in Santiago, Chile. The purpose of the post is to promote FAO’s efforts to implement its Strategic Framework and three Regional Initiatives (RIs) to position the Organization as the lead UN agency effectively combating hunger and malnutrition, as well as ensuring that knowledge and information is available to Members and stakeholders, in line with current FAO communication guidelines and policies.

Reporting Lines

The National Professional Officer (Press and Content) reports to the Communications Officer under the general guidance of the Assistant Director General (ADG/RR) for Latin America and the Caribbean.

Technical Focus

Contribute to the development and strengthening of internal communication, web publishing and media-relations activities of the Organization.

Key Results

Effective and efficient coordination and provision of the technical and operational support of the programme and project activities.

Key Functions

• Processes, coordinates arrangements and delivers services;
• Provides support to promoting the image of FAO through advocacy of the Organization's mandate, programmes and activities including development and maintenance of communication tools (e.g. website, press releases and publications);
• Researches and analyses communication policy and service delivery issues, maintains operational statistics, and prepares related reports;
• Contributes to the development of information and training materials and coordinates and assists in the presentation of information/training sessions to management and staff;
• Provides communication related information and advice to management and staff;
• Participates in project teams and work groups;
• Performs other duties as required.

Specific Functions

• Establishes and maintains working relationships with regional media representatives, including print, broadcast and digital media, ensuring the timely preparation of press releases, editorial articles, press conferences, interviews with FAO experts, replies to specific enquiries from journalists;
• Serves as copy-editor and editor within the RLC Communications team, editing articles, preparing and reviewing talking points, key messages and Q-A's, and creating content for web and social media including video scripts for social media;
• Contributes to enhance FAO's presence in the public opinion and that of all its Members in the regional media;
• Writes content for and promotes activities related to FAO's profile and presence in social media channels in the region, in line with the Organization's communication policies;
• Develops communication plans and products to support and strengthen the Organization's relationship with its Members, donors, academia, civil society, private sector and the general public;
• Drafts messages to reach FAO's target audiences and translate FAO's broad mandate into content that will attract media attention and public engagement;
• In collaboration with the Regional Office focal points, prepares outreach and promotion plans for World Food Day, celebration of International Years and Days relevant to FAO's mandate, the launch of flagship publications and other events;
• Reviews and updates the information content of the regional website in both Spanish and English;
• Supports the capacity of the Regional Office to interact through social media, strengthens internal communications and improves the content of regional publications and information products;
• Performs other duties as required.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

• National of Chile;
• Advanced university degree in journalism, political science, communications, social science or related fields;
• Three years of relevant experience in planning, development and implementation of press and communication contents, activities and strategies;
• Working knowledge (proficient - level C) of Spanish and English.
