OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The Research for Health Department sits within the Science Division. The overall mission of the Science Division is to harness the power of science and innovation to improve health in a systematic way, by ensuring the excellence, relevance and efficiency of WHO's core technical functions, including norms and standards and research. Within this Division, the specific purpose of the Research for Health department is to accelerate the impact of ethical, evidence-based research for people's health. Its mandate is structured around three key roles: 1) to provide leadership on matters related to the impact of research on people's health around the world; 2) to ensure that ethics is central to WHO's recommendations to countries, to public health programmes and for clinical practice, with the aim of maximizing benefits while mitigating risks; 3) to secure the overall efficiency and impact of the WHO research process. The Research for Health Department is made up of three teams: (1)Emerging technologies, research prioritization and support, (2) Health ethics and governance, and (3) Evidence to policy and impact.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

  • Coordinate and manage the member states and stakeholder engagement in WHO's work related to the clinical trials WHA resolution.
  • Oversee the programmatic and technical implementation of the activities associated with the development of the technical products as required by the WHA resolution on strengthening the quality of evidence from clinical trials, linking as appropriate with other R&D and clinical trials activities within WHO, including mRNA capacity building, R&D blueprint, AMR Research, NTDs, GAP-f, regulation and prequalification, research ethics.
  • Develop work plans, monitor implementation, and produce regular reports on progress made as well as technical reports requested by WHO governing bodies.
  • Organize and facilitate the convening of partners, researchers and stakeholders as well as coordinate the internal and external coordination and management of the consultation processes required to develop the technical products.
  • Provide technical support to the research data policy function including providing support to the development of a WHO research metadata repository, and a managed access committee.
  • Provide technical support to the launch of the implementation of pathogen genome data-sharing principles.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: An advanced level university degree (Masters's level or above) in Public Health, Health Research or a related field.
Desirable: PhD in Public Health, Health Research or a related field

Experience

Essential: A minimum of seven years experience working and managing public health programmes providing critical programme and managerial support on programmatic issues, including in relation to health research. Demonstrated relevant experience at the international level.
Desirable: Experience working in an international organization. Experience in conducting clinical trials for health research.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 75,602 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 4952 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
