Result of Service

The consultant will:
• Research on methodologies to monitor emissions from sources identified in previous studies or by IMEO members.
o Emission source monitoring will be based primarily on Sentinel-2 and Landsat multispectral satellite data, but other missions may be considered if appropriate.
o To improve the current methodologies, research the implementation of auxiliary information not necessarily obtained from satellites.
• Support the remote sensing scientist and participate in the analysis and writing of papers in peer- reviewed journals.
• Document the work carried out and the analysis of the results

Duties and Responsibilities

UN Environment Programme (Energy and Climate Branch) hosts the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO). IMEO is a data-driven, action-focused UNEP initiative that takes an innovative approach to address the methane emissions problem by collecting, integrating, and reconciling data from different sources, including scientific measurement studies, satellites, rigorous industry reporting through the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0), and national inventories.

IMEO will create a global public dataset of empirically verified methane emissions, with an initial focus on fossil fuel sources, and will interconnect data with actions on research, reporting, and regulation. This will catalyse deep reductions in human-made methane emissions and serve the rapidly growing ecosystem of governments, companies, investors, researchers, NGOs, and other entities engaging in this crucial climate challenge.

Qualifications/special skills

Master’s degree in engineering, computer science, remote sensing, or equivalent.
• Experience in processing large volumes of satellite data especially focused on the detection of methane emissions, and in particular from high-resolution point-source imagers (Sentinel-2, Landsat)
• Proficiency in data processing methods, including those based on machine learning, and remote sensing data processing tools.
• Skills in geospatial information and analysis.
• Knowledge of the main methane emission specific sources within the fossil fuel sector; familiarity with energy infrastructure and facilities databases is a plus.
• Knowledge of false positive potential sources in different case studies and critical thinking when interpreting preliminary own- and third-party results.
Demonstrated scientific expertise, including but not limited to a record of scholarly publications.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Exceptional personal organization and attention to detail; ability to work independently and as part of a diverse, geographically dispersed team.
• Experience in performing rigorous analysis with short deadlines in support of highly visible work

Languages

Fluency in written and spoken English is required for the position.
