Mission and objectives

UNDP is the UN’s global development network, an organization that advocates for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience, and resources to help build resilient nations and improve the livelihoods of people. UNDP Gambia was established in 1975 as a development partner to provide technical assistance through advice, access to its global knowledge networks and financial support to implement government development frameworks to boost capacity development and promote national efforts to eradicate poverty and attain the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In The Gambia, UNDP supports national efforts for sustainable human development in line with the Gambian National Development Plan (NDP) 2018 – 2021 which is aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development/SDGs and the African Union Agenda 2063. To deliver on its mandate, UNDP partners with key government institutions and employs different means of actions including institutional capacity strengthening, harnessing strategic linkages, support to evidence-based policy formulation, planning and implementation, resource mobilization, support to national planning processes and mainstreaming of relevant issues.

Context

The Gambia has a small, undiversified economy heavily reliant on tourism, trade, remittances and subsistence agriculture. Given that almost half of The Gambia’s 2 million population (48.6%) live below the poverty line, a large proportion of the population is vulnerable to shocks and crises. COVID-19 hit the country amidst an employment crisis of 57.1% and 41.5% for women and men respectively. Prior to the pandemic, tourism and agriculture together contributed 50% of the GDP and accounted for 90% of the labor force. The UN Assistant Secretary General, UNDP Assistant Administrator and UNDP Regional Director for Africa visited The Gambia for the first time 20-23 November 2022. The visit of the UNDP RBA Director (21-23 November 2022) presents an opportunity to interact with key partners including government, UNDP beneficiaries, the UNCT as well as staff, to share the Africa vision and provide updates on ongoing reforms. Specifically, the objectives are twofold: Positioning of UNDP on The Gambia’s transition and key interventions such as PACD and a morale boost to staff through engagement with RD.
