Job Summary:

The primary role of the Asylum Caseworker is to provide comprehensive, culturally appropriate, client-centered case management services for program participants, including completing eligibility screening and enrollment paperwork, developing service plans, educating about community services, resources, and legal rights, and helping problem solve barriers to access. This position is also responsible for assisting with administrative tasks including case notes, case file management, and data collection.

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive case management services to individuals enrolled in asylum case management, including asylum-seekers and those without permanent legal status
  • Conduct outreach to case management staff, refugee-serving agencies, ethnic community-based organizations and others to inform service providers and asylum seekers of programs and services.
  • Complete eligibility screenings for all referrals and enrollment paperwork for all eligible program participants.
  • Complete social and legal assessments for all enrolled clients.
  • Develop a service and safety plans for Program participants.
  • Keep up-to-date information and knowledge about survivors of torture, asylum and other immigration processes, violence against women act, and anti-trafficking.
  • Provide comprehensive case management services, including assisting with accessing community resources through local partners.
  • Provide appropriate legal referrals and help identify and arrange social activities in-line with service plans.
  • Guide and assist participants to receive support services in the community based on their service plan.
  • Ensure all services are linguistically appropriate and help advocate with mainstream service providers for linguistically-appropriate services.
  • Complete case notes in a thorough and timely fashion.
  • Implement client satisfaction surveys and client progress surveys at intervals outlined in the grant proposal.
  • Ensure all family data is entered into data management system in a timely manner.
  • Participate in all program meetings, staff development activities, and fully engages as a member of the team.
  • Comply with all policies, procedures and protocols of the agency.
  • Support statewide efforts to support the needs of asylum seekers as requested and needed.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

 

 

Key Working Relationships:

 

Position Reports to:  SOT/ACM Supervisor

Indirect Reporting: Interns/Volunteers
Other Internal and/or external contacts: The Asylum Caseworker will be responsible for developing relationships within the IRC network and external relations with social service agencies and government entities to expand the role of IRC ASF programs

Internal: IRC Asylum Seeker Case Management programs

External: Arizona asylum seeker coalitions, Attorney offices providing pro-bono legal services, social service agencies, community education presentations, community outreach

 

Job Requirements:

Education:

  • Undergraduate degree in Social Work or similar field strongly preferred; comparable related work experience may be substituted.

Work Experience:

  • 2+ years of related work experience; 1 year minimum working with victims of crime or other vulnerable populations.
  • Case management and/or victims assistance experience preferred

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:

  • Excellent written and spoken English skills, Spanish-bilingual ability preferred
  • Strong organizational skills and detail-oriented
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills
  • Public Speaking and/or presentation experience preferred
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work as a team member with collaborative partners, the community, and clients in a cross-cultural, multi-disciplinary environment
  • Basic knowledge of U.S. immigration processes, pathways, and policies
  • Computer literacy, data base experience preferred
  • Ability to work independently and be a flexible team player
  • Ability and willingness to drive 15 passenger van.

Language Skills: 

  • Fluency in written and spoken English, bilingual ability preferred in Spanish or other refugee/immigrant language used in Arizona.
  • Cross-cultural understanding and strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

Certificates or Licenses:

  • Must have a valid driver’s license, active insurance policy, access to reliable transportation and the ability to travel regularly throughout the service delivery area.
  • In accordance with Arizona State Law, must possess or be eligible to receive a fingerprint clearance card.

 

Working Environment:  

  • A combination of standard office environment, remote work, and ‘field’ time within the service delivery area to perform the above outlined responsibilities.
  • May require occasional weekend and/or evening work.
  • Must be able to lift 35 to 50 pounds (furniture, household supplies, and food boxes).
