The Digital Communication Officer supports the Mexico Country Office's efforts by working under the direct supervision of the Digital Communication Officer leading the digital unit in UNICEF Mexico's Communication Area (led by the Chief of Communication) to update and implement an advocacy and communication strategy that supports the achievement of programmatic, fundraising, alliance building, and brand positioning objectives.

How can you make a difference?

Assists in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating the digital and social media aspects of an advocacy and communication strategy, to get children’s and women’s issues into the public domain, strengthen political will in support of UNICEF’s mission and objectives in the country, and enhance the organization’s credibility and brand.

In line with UNICEF´s content and branding guidelines, as well as the Country Office´s objectives, and exercising the editorial criteria agreed with the Chief of Communication and supervised by the officer heading the digital unit:

1. Digital communication

Support the development – and ensure implementation and updating – of the digital content and social media engagement aspects within the Office´s Advocacy & Communication Strategy are timely and effectively executed.

Content strategy implementation for the office´s webs and social media channels:

  • Populate, manage and update the official website and other microsites, as well as social media channels.
  • Produce digital and social media content including social media cards, GIFs, videos and other multimedia assets to be published on digital channels.
  • Plan and craft social media posts for social media channels: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, etc.
  • Utilize digital and social media channels and tools to report on the office´s events, missions and campaigns.

Social-media engagement strategy implementation:

  • Update and management of the Office´s social media channels: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and TikTok with content crafted for each channel and for each audience based on indicators.
  • Support to coordinate with social media listening agency on reports and the monitoring of mentions about brand and initiatives on digital media.
  • Evaluate performance and implement different approaches and initiatives as needed.
  • Develop metrics and insights reports on results for social media channels and UNICEF Mexico website.
  • Provide feedback to the Regional Office and the Department of Communications (DOC) at HQ on the use of digital communication messages and on regional/global campaigns implemented by the Office.
  • Support in the implementation of ads campaigns on Meta (Facebook and Instagram).

2. Communication materials

Contribute to ensure that the production of communication products and material is timely executed and followed up to support the country office’s communication and public advocacy strategy, regional and global campaigns and priorities, and to support resource mobilization as set out in the work plan.

  • Support the production of communication material (e.g. briefing notes, images, video., web pages, etc.) that meet the country and global standards as set out in the UNICEF Communication Toolkit.
  • Assist in drafting and editing articles, press releases, human interest stories and other advocacy/information material for both web-based and traditional media, as appropriate.
  • Follow up on the production of advocacy and communication material (e.g., films, videos, audio-visuals, etc.), and oversee the qualitative aspects of production, (e.g., quality control, translations, reviews of layout and graphic design, etc.) to meet standards as set out in the UNICEF Communication Toolkit.
  • Maintain an up-to-date documentation center for communication material including publications, press releases and clippings, photographs, audio-visual material and web resources.
  • Recommend appropriate information and communication material for use in media and other advocacy and communication activities.
  • Recommend established contacts, networks, resources and processes to support communication activities.

3. Media relations and reputation management

Contribute to ensure that media in the country are properly catered for in the digital arena and that UNICEF´s reputation is effectively managed.

  • Ensure that website pages and other digital channels of interest to media are accurately, timely and efficiently populated and updated.
  • Attend public events, press conferences or other activities of interest to media, ensuring timely/live dissemination of content through digital channels, as appropriate.
  • Monitor social-media conversations and alert the Country Office with regards to any relevant/reputational issues arising.

4. Monitoring and evaluation

Contribute to ensure that regular monitoring and evaluation activities are undertaken according to the work plan to ensure maximum impact and continuous improvement of country communication efforts. Contribute to ensure that results and reports are prepared and shared on a timely basis.

  • Assist in coordinating appropriate audience research and compiling and analyzing relevant data.
  • Monitor and evaluate the appropriate and timely dissemination of advocacy and communication material to target audiences and participate in the evaluation of their impact. Monitor and evaluate the use and effectiveness of media material. Maintain a library of coverage (clippings, coverage etc.)
  • Monitor the public perception of UNICEF in the country and recommend appropriate action to maintain a positive image for the organization.
  • Assist in providing feedback to DOC on the use and appropriateness of global communication material, such as publications, images and multimedia products.
  • Ensure good quality data collection, analysis and evaluation and reporting to ensure effective communication strategies, planning and effective and efficient advocacy.
  • Undertake lessons learned review of successful and unsuccessful communication experiences as directed by supervisor and prepare reports if needed.

5. Celebrities, partners and special events

Contribute to ensure that the Country Office’s contact list of individuals, groups, organizations and fora (including Government, UN, and bilateral counterparts), are maintained and further developed, whose support is essential to/can assist in achieving the advocacy and communication objectives and who support and are able to actively participate in special events and activities that further the country programme goals.

  • Help organize and generate public support for special events and activities to promote country programme goals, including through influencer engagement through social media.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining close collaboration with mass media, as well as with groups and organizations whose support is essential to the achievement of advocacy and communication objectives.
  • Maintain and update celebrity and partner contact lists/database for country office.
  • Monitor/document process and effectiveness of working with these individuals/organizations.
  • Prepare background communication and promotional material for briefings and visits of media, Goodwill Ambassadors, donors, National Committee representatives and other special interest groups. The task includes preparing information material (e.g., press releases, programme summaries, country fact sheets and media kits), and assisting in the planning, logistics and administrative arrangements.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have...

Education: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Digital Communication, Communication, Journalism, Public Relations or related field.

Experience: 

Required:

  • One-year practical professional work experience in digital communication, social media management and web content production.

Desirable:

  • Field work experience.
  • Background/familiarity with humanitarian emergency situations.
  • Additional years of experience in digital communication, social media, and interactive digital media.

Language: 

  • Fluency in Spanish is required.
  • A proficient level of English is required, but complete fluency is preferred. If the person hired is not fluent, he/she will have to commit to improving their English skills in the first six/twelve months of work
