Org. Setting and Reporting

The internship positions are located in the Human Resources Management Service (HRMS), Division for Management (DM), United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV)/United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

The internships an be undertaken both in person and remotely and are envisaged for a period of 6 months duration with various starting times throughout 2023. The first positions have a starting date in January/February 2023.

The internships are UNPAID and full-time; i.e. 5 days per week (40 hours). The selected interns will work under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

The functions during the internship can be from a multitude of HR areas subject to the candidate's background and preferences as well as the needs of the ongoing work projects. Some examples of potential tasks in these areas are provided below:

Office of the Chief, Human Resources Management Service:
• Contribute to the implementation in UNOV/UNODC of Secretary-General's Youth 2030 Strategy by:
-Assist with the hiring, on boarding and administration of interns, including organization of learning events and town hall meetings as well as help with the streamlining of the internship programme both at HQ and in the field;
Assist with the hiring process of Junior Professional Officers (JPOs), including liaison with the interested offices and donor Member States as well as provision of support to the JPOs once onboarded;
-Conduct research on various HR topics, including across international organizations and identification of best practices;
• Contribute to preparation and review of documents, including guidelines, reports, meeting minutes, newsletters, etc.;
• Create surveys; analyse data and create reports/presentations using various platforms related to various areas of human resources management;
• Perform additional projects/duties as required.

The Operational and Advisory Support Unit (OASU) provide expert policy and legal advice on human resources policy and the interpretation of UN Staff Rules and Regulations. The selected intern will have the opportunity to contribute to a wide range of human resources management priorities:

• Assistance with tracking and logging all incoming requests for legal & policy advice, cases and queries and the production of overviews and statistics;
• Research assignments including for Administration of Justice case preparation including jurisprudence and host country matters;
• Assistance with the design, lay-out and content of the policy and legal sub-site of the HRMS intranet website;
• Other relevant tasks as required by the supervisor.

The Talent Development Team (TDT) is responsible for implementing the Organization's learning and development policy at Headquarters and UNODC field offices, which emphasizes that staff development is an on-going process and a necessary investment for UNOV/UNODC to successfully achieve the UN mandates. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Undertake independent projects to include research, drafting training proposals, presentations on various training and development–related topics;
• Prepare training-related statistics and gathering other data from existing databases, as required;
• Provide support in preparation of training workshops and meetings, to include scheduling, review and preparation of materials, registrations, etc.;
• Contribute to the Team’s outreach activities which many include training needs analysis, client satisfaction surveys and course evaluations, as well as regularly reviewing and updating content on Intranet, and marketing and promotion of various training programmes;
• Participate in team meetings, prepares minutes and helps to coordinate follow-up activities;
• Assist with the administration of UNOV/UNODC’s language, internship, field office training and other programmes, as needed;
• Assist with marketing campaigns and design diverse communication pieces such as brochures, flyers, guides and manuals.
• Perform other duties to support the team, as needed.

The main function of the Staff Entitlements Unit (SEU) is to provide support related to the administration of benefits and entitlements to staff of UNOV/UNODC and select Vienna-based offices of UN Secretariat entities. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Participate in team meetings and prepare minutes;
• Digitally record information regarding extensions of temporary appointments beyond 364 days;
• Assists with the monitoring of compliance with Covid-19 measures in the workplace by staff members, prepare reports and statistics, and collaborate with the communication of any new measures;
• Participate in the preparation of Letters of Appointment and Notes Verbale, and keep digital record of them;
• Other relevant tasks as required in the Unit.

The Staffing, Diversity and Outreach Section (SDOS) comprises of the Planning, Contracting and Reporting Unit (PCRU) and the Staffing Team (ST). Its main function is to provide value-added support and advice to clients in UNOV/UNODC and other Vienna-based UN Secretariat entities for the end-to-end staffing process, starting from the planning phase, covering both staff and non-staff personnel. Next to the provision of services in the staffing process, SDOS coordinates activities to strengthen a diverse and enabling work environment.

• Support the Staffing, Diversity and Outreach Section with activities in the context of the updated UNOV/UNODC Strategy for Gender Equality and the Empowerment for Women,
• Support the coordination of activities in the context of the UN Disability Inclusion Strategy,
• Assist with background research and drafting of written material pertaining to disability inclusion, geographical diversity and gender equality including talking points, email communication, concept notes, presentations, and other material as applicable,
• Provide administrative and logistical support to the UNOV/UNODC Early Career Initiative for Women,
• Provide administrative and logistical support to internal and external diversity outreach events for UNOV/UNODC,
• Other duties as required.

Technological awareness: Keeps abreast of available technology. Understands applicability and limitations of technology to the work of the office. Actively seeks to apply technology to appropriate tasks. Shows willingness to learn new technology.


To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

• Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). (OFFICIAL WRITTEN PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING ONE OF THE ABOVE POSSIBILITIES MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION);

• Be computer literate in standard software applications;

• Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

• Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the positions advertised, fluency in English, i.e. oral and written proficiency, is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

United Nations Considerations
