The Role

If so, you might be the right candidate to join the Programs team at the Last Mile Health (LMH) Ethiopia Office as the Project Coordinator, Child Health.  

Reporting to the Monitoring, Evaluation, Research and Learning (MERL) Director, the Project Coordinator - Child Health will strengthen and streamline a robust measurement, evaluation, research, and learning on the newly initiated Last Mile Health and Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) project to revitalize the Implementation of CBNC (Community Based Newborn Care) and iCCM (Integrated Community Case Management of Childhood Illnesses) at the community level. The project focuses on gathering Child health data and evidence to inform the design, development, and user testing of evidence-based solutions for increased utilization of community-based services for appropriate management of childhood illnesses through the Implementation of CBNC and iCCM by trained Health Extension Workers (HEWs) in Ethiopia’s Health Extension Program.

The Project Coordinator-Child health is responsible for the development of Child health plans that measure the progress, outcomes, and impacts of the Improving child health through enhanced CBNC and iCCM implementation program. The project coordinator will ensure the design of the project’s data tools, process systems, data assurance processes, lead qualitative and quantitative data , and create data visualizations to promote data use for decision making. Working collaboratively with the Ethiopia MERL Director and Global MERL team, the project coordinator will also support the synthesis and dissemination of results to ensure effective feedback and use by the range of stakeholders supporting LMH child health project implementation, monitoring and evaluation in Ethiopia and the global arena.

This position is only open to candidates who are located in and authorized to work in Ethiopia.

What You'll Do

  • Support the development and implementation of Improving child health through enhanced CBNC and iCCM project inclusive of evaluation questions, methods, data collection tools, data collection plans, indicators, targets (as applicable), analytics, reporting, and dissemination.
  • Design and perform quantitative and qualitative analysis; specifically mobile applications for the clinical education of health workers in Improving child health through enhanced CBNC and iCCM project. 
  • Conduct desk reviews, and gap assessments in CNBC and iCCM revitalization and prototype woredas
  • Conduct a human-centered design approach to design, develop and test interventions to improve the management of neonatal and childhood illnesses
  • Organize and participate in program monitoring field visits and put in place systems for data quality checks for field-level data collection
  • Support the program team in continuous monitoring of Ethiopia Country Program KPIs 
  • Review and evaluate child health care delivery key performance indicators in CBNC and iCCM services
  • Lead the evaluation of  the skills of HEWs  to assess, classify and treat sick children under 5 using iCCM at the health post
  • Conduct focus group discussions with community members and health extension workers and develop co-creation sessions for intervention design
  • Engage in the decision process on what to prototype and actively involve in the testing of the prototype in selected Health posts
  • Participate in the process of building the road map for the implementation phase-including evaluating cost drivers and effectiveness of the interventions
  • Create accessible, relevant, and timely data dashboards and visualizations to be used internally and externally for strategic decision-making. 
  • Support results dissemination through data presentations, evaluation reports, and manuscripts as needed. 
  • Share evaluation findings with the Ethiopia team, and MOH and collaborate to use findings to refine strategies, strengthen programs, and improve activities 
  • Actively engage in technical working groups of MCH directorate at MOH and provide updated information on the progress of the project
  • Lead grant development and reporting for Ethiopia Program data 
  • Manage Institutional Review Board proposal submission and compliance for research in child health studies
  • Lead implementation of data management, quality assurance, and data cleaning procedures.
  • Support the recruitment and training of Child health-related consultants, data collectors, and other external contractors 
  • Provide support to other Ethiopia LMH projects as required.

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and MPH
  • Several years of professional experience in public health and/or international development, with relevant years leading child health activities.
  • Demonstrated experience in Ethiopia HEP and management of childhood illnesses through the Implementation of CBNC and iCCM 
  • Experience in human-centered design and new health program prototyping   
  • Demonstrated experience in quantitative and qualitative methods and applying to child health programs
  • Experience developing reports, publications, whitepapers, toolkits, and factsheets in child health programs preferably in CNBC and iCCM areas.
  • Ability to independently select and perform the analyses for complex data sets, including, but not limited to: descriptive statistics, multivariate logistic regression, comparative analysis, the appropriate weighting of samples, etc. 
  • Experience and knowledge of DHIS2 (District Health Information System) and e-CHIS (Electronic Community Health Information System) 
  • Experience in data visualization (strongly prefer experience with Tableau, Power BI or other data visualization platforms) and with data quality audits 
  • Expertise in designing and implementing process management (or fieldwork) plans and adapting those plans based on field experiences 
  • Demonstrated experience with stakeholder engagement and ability to collaborate with and provide technical support to internal teams 
  • Facilitation of inclusive and culturally appropriate conversations with a range of stakeholders across geographies and cultural contexts
  • Experience in collaborating with and coaching program/implementing teams to support data use
