Mission and objectives

UNESCO is the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. It seeks to build peace through international cooperation in education, sciences and culture. UNESCO's programmes contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals defined in the 2030 Agenda, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2015.

Context

The UNESCO Office in Kathmandu, established in 1998, contributes to build peace through international cooperation in education, sciences and culture. UNESCO's pro-grammes contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals defined in the 2030 Agenda, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2015.’ UNESCO works to attain quality education for all, focusing on gender equality and adult literacy, to mobilize scientific knowledge and science policy for sustainable development, to preserve cultural heritage, promote cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue, and to empower people through the free flow of ideas and access to information and knowledge. To achieve these objectives, UNESCO actively participates in the work of the UN Country Team in Nepal and closely cooperates with other development partners in the country.

Task description

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the UNESCO Representative, or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN University Volunteer: • Assist the Culture Team in UNESCO Nepal in developing, planning and implementing activities and projects related to Culture in Nepal. The incumbent will work within the framework of UNESCO’s Country Strategy (UCS) for Nepal and the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) for Nepal. In particular, the trainee shall: • Support colleagues on a broad range of issues related to the arts, culture (tangible and intangible, sustainable development, and the management of World Heritage areas in Nepal; • Provide assistance to communication and advocacy initiatives related to the implemen-tation of activities in the cultural and creative industries, World Heritage and Intangible Cultural Heritage and related programming of UNESCO. In addition, the Programme Associate will work with the Culture team to explore opportunities of collaboration with civil society and the private sector in the aforementioned programmes. • Assist in implementing and coordinating activities, events, and other initiatives related to UNESCO’s projects and activities in Culture; • Recommend priorities for future action by building on existing work with key partners, developing new partnerships and mobilizing resources to enhance cultural program-ming in Nepal, particularly those in favour of youth, women and indigenous communi-ties. • Work with colleagues to further the integration of the Culture Programme with that of Education, Science and Communication and Information Units in the Office. • Perform other duties as requested by the Head of Office. Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities: • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for in-stance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; • Provide annual and end of assignment self- reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities. • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publica-tions/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers; • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible. • As an active Culture team member, efficient, timely, responsive, client-friendly and high-quality support rendered to UNESCO and its beneficiaries in the accomplishment of her/his functions, including: • In-depth knowledge acquired of UNESCO’s Cultural Sector, including conservation initia-tives in Cultural and Natural World Heritage sites; • Understanding how to work effectively in an international environment with diverse stake-holders; • Experience in organizing workshops and consultations. • Solid working knowledge of the operations of an intergovernmental organization; • Strengthened analytical, communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills; • Experience in writing professional reports, concept notes and briefings. • Contribution to effective communication materials such as technical reports, donor reports, articles, brochures, publications, and/or mission reports. • Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) perspective is systematically applied, integrated and documented in all activities throughout the assignment • A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for peace and development dur-ing the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed
