The Relief and Social Services Statistician reports to the Head, Refugee Registration and Eligibility Services.

Responsibilities

- Provides technical guidance, capacity building and quality assurance measures for survey data collection and processing activities to monitor the living conditions of Palestine refugees in UNRWA five fields of operation.
- Leads the harmonization and analysis of living condition surveys, adopting appropriate methodologies, including calculation of poverty rates and development of vulnerability profiles, as required for in-kind and cash-based transfer planning design.
- Leads additional statistical research activities, including triangulation between survey, registration and relief databases, to support evidence base decision making by addressing information needs for programme planning, monitoring, targeting and impact assessment purposes.
- Prepares survey reports, methodological notes, research papers, presentations, bulletins and dashboards to disseminate statistics and facilitate their interpretation.
- Participates in UN inter-agency working groups and keeps track of demographic, social and economic data availability as far as relevant to UNRWA operations.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) from an accredited educational institution in statistics, demography, economics, or related social sciences with quantitative analysis and research methods component.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible relevant experience in an academic, government or UN context, involving the collection, processing, analysis and dissemination of statistical data, preferably with a focus on calculation of poverty rates and development of vulnerability profiles is required.

Unless already serving as an international staff member in the UN Common System, a candidate for an international post must have at least two continuous years of relevant international experience outside UNRWA, and outside the country(s) of which the candidate is a national or holds citizenship, a passport, or a national identity number is required.

Prior working experience in the Near East and knowledge of the political history and socio-economic dynamics of the region is desirable.

Advanced knowledge of survey methods and statistical software (such as Stata, SPSS, SAS, R, and alike) is required.

Languages

Excellent command of written and spoken English.

Knowledge of Arabic language is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice

Type of Contract and duration: 2 years, with the possibility of further extension.
