Job Purpose

Provide support in the day-to-day operations of experiments and research activities, including preparation of materials, conducted in the field/screen house/greenhouse/laboratory, from seeding, and harvesting to seed processing to ensure that research standards of quality assurance are met. Provide timely support to contract workers in the field/screen house/greenhouse/laboratory to ensure smooth operations and efficiency monitoring. Actively contribute to the maintenance and organization of the field/screen house/greenhouse/laboratory as required by the institute protocols including maintaining supply inventory, cleanliness, orderliness, and safety in the laboratory and other workspaces, preparation of commonly used solutions/materials, inventory and requests for chemicals and other supplies as well as waste disposal. Provide support in training scholars, farmers, extension workers, and interns to ensure the transfer of knowledge for rice production and rice post-harvest technologies

This position will be based at the IRRI Burundi Office and could only be filled by a permanent resident of Burundi. 

 

Roles and Responsibilities

Purpose

  • Provide support in the day-to-day operations of experiments and research activities, including preparation of materials, conducted in the field/screenhouse/greenhouse/laboratory, from seeding, and harvesting to seed processing to ensure that research standards of quality assurance are met
  • Perform specific procedures related to experiments/study (e.g. disease inoculation including preparation of inoculums, crossing, monitoring pests and diseases, and making timely requests for Experiment station monitoring to determine if spraying is needed)
  • Compile and review sample collection processing

Engagement

  • Provide timely support to contract workers in the field/screenhouse/greenhouse/laboratory to ensure smooth operations and efficiency-monitoring
  • Support in the training of scholars, farmers, extension workers, and interns to ensure maximum and effective transfer of knowledge

Delivery

  • Actively contribute to the maintenance and organization of the field/screenhouse/greenhouse/laboratory as required by the institute protocols including maintaining supply inventory, cleanliness, orderliness, and safety in the laboratory and other workspaces, preparation of commonly used solutions/materials, inventory and requests for chemicals and other supplies as well as waste disposal
  • Sequence, encode, and provide basic data analysis of characterized stored germplasm and assess plant parameters and yield components
Qualifications
  • Has completed the Burundi Agriculture Institute (ITAB: Institut Technique Agricole du Burundi), A2 diploma in the Agriculture Section, with 2 years  of relevant work experience.
Skills Required
  • Has basic knowledge of MS office programs such as Word and Excel or related software

preferred:

  • Has experience in rice production
  • Know how to drive a motorcycle on the field and have a valid driver's license for this category or be willing to learn it.
