UNICEF Pacific's multi-country office is seeking for an Intern to join the Social Policy Programme section for the Public Finance for Children (PF4C) for 3 months to be based in the Suva (Fiji), office.

In the Pacific we work in Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu: These 14 Pacific island countries are home to 2.3 million people, including 1.2 million children and youth, living on more than 660 islands and atolls stretching across 17.2 million square kilometers of the Pacific Ocean, an area comparable to the combined size of the United States of America and Canada. Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Solomon Islands, and Tuvalu are classified as Fragile States according to World Bank/OECD criteria.

How can you make a difference? 

The Intern will be required to undertake a public expenditure analysis focusing on social sectors important for children such as health, education, WASH and social protection in selected Pacific island countries, under the guidance of Chief Social Policy.

Expected Outcome and Specific Tasks:

  • Collect public expenditure data in social sectors affecting children such as education, health, WASH and social welfare in selected Pacific countries to be agreed with the Supervisor.
  • Using the data collected, analyse the level, trend and composition of public expenditure in social sectors included in the analysis.
  • Disseminate the findings of the analysis to key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Other tasks that may be assigned by the Supervisor.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have… 

  • Be enrolled in a graduate or Ph.D. degree programme or have graduated within the past two years in areas of economics, finance, public policy, or development studies (Applicants must be at least 18 years old).
  • Have no immediate relatives (e.g. father, mother, brother, sister) working in any UNICEF office; and
  • Have no other relatives in the line of authority to which the intern will report to.
  • Have excellent academic performance through recent university or institution records with strong quantitative analytical skills.
  • Prior work experience in expenditure tracking or analysis, preferably with the Ministry of Finance or Planning, academia, think tank or consult firm is a strong asset.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work with multiple partners. 
  • Experience in Pacific Island countries is a plus.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.
