Nearly one billion people are visually impaired because they have no access to eyeglasses. Most live in low-and middle-income countries. The need for eyeglasses is growing rapidly, in part due to changing demographics. Not having access to eyeglasses has significant impact on people’s ability to learn, earn income, drive safely and live healthy and productive lives. Over the past decades, NGOs have put this issue on the map and, together with partners, have tested different approaches to getting eyeglasses to millions. The challenge is now how we can build on these learnings and scale from the roughly 10 million people who got glasses through these initiatives to the 1 billion people that need them.

CHAI has extensive experience in tackling large scale issues. We will use this experience to develop the strategic and operational plan for scaling eyeglasses. Such a plan will require to identify high-impact target populations and evaluate multiple delivery models. CHAI is looking for a (senior) associate to support the development of this plan over the next three months. We will gather and assess market intelligence and evidence about different models to scale up eyeglasses, and prioritize such models based on their cost and potential for impact. We will identify priority countries and develop costed plans for driving scale of proven models in these countries. We will design strategies to mobilize resources needed in the short and longer term.

As (senior) associate, you will lead this analysis. You will be expected to: 1) manage work streams; 2) lead the research; and 3) document and present findings. You will be expected to complete desktop research, analyze and interpret existing data, and interview key stakeholders. This work will require you to develop compelling and structured presentations (powerpoint) that with a clear rationale for prioritizing high-impact intervention opportunities. You will need to build effective working relationships, both with external partners and CHAI colleagues.

In this role, you will report to the Director Global Assistive Technology and may have a regular interaction with other CHAI teams, both Country and Global. You are expected to work independently and flexibly and have a deep personal commitment to producing the highest quality results. We are seeking a highly motivated individual with outstanding analytical ability and communication skills. This role is for 5 months, but duration can be extended/shortened based on candidate availability. Limited travel may involve a team meeting (in the US) and potentially visiting one or more program countries.

• Identify priority countries and target populations;
• Conduct high quality research and analysis on different models for scaling up eyeglasses in low-and middle-income countries to prioritize the most impactful scaling pathways to reach these populations;
• Review the existing evidence on models and identify evidence gaps and opportunities;
• Identify enablers and assess feasibility to scale models in certain countries or regions. This will involve collaboration with CHAI country teams;
• Manage selected workstreams and report regularly on project progress and status;
• Maintain a comprehensive fact-base about the gathered evidence, including structured overview of meeting minutes and relevant academic studies;
• Develop clear and compelling slides to present findings and insights of the work;
• Present findings to internal and external stakeholders;
• Develop final products aligned with the project needs;
• Other responsibilities as needed by supervisor.

Key skills required for this job include:

 Additionally:

• At least two years of work experience in a fast paced, results-oriented work environment
• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
• Exceptional analytical, research and presentation skills for both qualitative and quantitative data. Proficient in MS Excel, PowerPoint and Word
• Ability to work independently and effectively in a high-performance, dynamic environment and handle multiple priorities simultaneously
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
• Strong interpersonal skills, ability to interact effectively with business partners and colleagues from various cultural backgrounds
• Entrepreneurial mindset, including ability to work independently and self-motivate
• Highly organized with excellent attention to detail
