Org. Setting and Reporting

The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) is a global intergovernmental treaty aimed at the conservation and sustainable use of migratory species and their habitats. Numerous additional intergovernmental instruments on migratory species conservation have been adopted under the broad umbrella of CMS which are supported by the CMS Secretariat. In addition, two regional agreements on migratory species adopted under CMS have their own Secretariats which are co-located with the CMS Secretariat in Bonn - the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) and the Agreement on the Conservation of European Populations of Bats (EUROBATS).
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The United Nations Environment (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity that addresses environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. In the present context, UNEP provides the administrative functions for the CMS, AEWA and EUROBATS Secretariats. This post is located in the CMS Secretariat at the Bonn duty station in Germany.

This internship is located within the Joint Communications, Information Management and Outreach Team of the UNEP/CMS and the UNEP/AEWA Secretariats. The unit was established in January 2014 as a pilot to demonstrate joint services in the area of communications and information management between the CMS and AEWA Secretariats.

The internship is unpaid. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background and the major tasks assigned to the intern as well as the internship period. The intern will assist in the development and daily management of a wide spectrum of communication and information management related products and activities for both CMS and AEWA.

The Internship is for 6 months and UNPAID. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Information Officer at the Joint CMS & AEWA Communications, Information Management and Outreach Unit, the intern will:

• Assist in implementing the World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) Campaign: Support the Unit with the organization of the annual campaign (WMBD www.worldmigratorybirdday.org ) This will include assisting in the drafting of articles, maintaining the website, daily correspondence with event organizers, logistics, social media, research, content creation, and other tasks;
• Assist in the preparation of the 14th Conference of the Parties to CMS;
• Assist in the production of content for use on the CMS, AEWA and other websites, through research and drafting of articles, translations and development of new multi-media content;
• Assist in the day-to-day management of the various CMS and AEWA social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram) in particular in the context of communication campaigns such as WMBD and others being carried out by the Unit;
• Support Press / Media related work of the Joint Communications Unit by assisting in maintaining a targeted list of journalists, including contact details, main interests (based on research of past published articles);
• Support the Unit in the daily content management of several websites;
• Support the development of audio-visual and multimedia products (Video Clips, Animations, Graphics, Podcasts) for publication on websites and social media.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher; or
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);or
c. Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in a) and b)) and must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Preferred area of study: A degree programme in communications, media studies, international relations or journalism and other social sciences, including sociology, political science, environmental studies and as well as in the areas of information and knowledge management, or related field.

It would be desirable if candidates have the following interest and competencies:

• Have a keen interest in communications and the work of the United Nations;
• Have the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs;
• Have a keen interest in the environment and international relations, international wildlife and/or nature conservation;
• Be computer literate in standard office software applications (Microsoft Office or similar). Experience with website, design, video and multi-media software would be an asset;
• Have an interest and proven experience in using social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and similar);
• Experience in Drupal or other Content Management System would be desirable.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French, Spanish, Chinese, Russian or Arabic is desirable.
