Under the general direction of the Head of Section, the incumbent's duties will include:

  1. Revising translations covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the International Maritime Organization, including those of an exceptionally sensitive, complex or technical nature.
  2. Translating texts covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the International Maritime Organization, including those of an exceptionally sensitive, complex or technical nature.
  3. Making full use of standard computer-assisted-translation (CAT) tools and assists the Head of Service in promoting their utilization and in implementing any related IT tools and improvements.
  4. Assisting the Head of Section with programming work for the Section and with the preparation of instructions.
  5. Advising and assisting revisers and translators and briefing them on the procedures and practices of the Section and a broad range of subjects, as required.
  6. Ensuring that deadlines established for the production of documents are met.
  7. Assisting the Head of Section in the preparation of terminology material to meet the Section’s needs, including developing new terminology for use when none exists in the target language.
  8. Carrying out linguistic research in order to contribute to the preparation of glossaries, technical vocabulary and related reference material.
  9. Assisting the Head of Section in the preparation of instructions and in setting terminology standards.
  10. Assisting the Head of Section in verifying the quality of in-house and contractual translations.
  11. Training and coaching of junior staff.
  12. Assisting, as appropriate, with the daily and long-term programming of the work of the Section.
  13. Assisting the Head of Section in selecting texts for tests and competitive examinations for translators, marking candidates’ papers and evaluating results.
  14. Serves as Deputy to the Head of Section and acts as Officer-in-charge in the absence of the Head of Section.
  15. Performing other related duties as required.
