Job Purpose

The Rice Breeding Innovations Platform brings together the various research support and operational services across IRRI including Breeding Analytics, Data Management, and Software Development (BDS). The BDS:

  • works closely with clusters and platforms
  • develops, tests and releases software applications that translates science into ICT (Information and Communications Technology)
  • supports the standardization, capture, storage and curation of data in centralized and accessible IRRI databases. 
  • recommends and trains data capture technologies

Junior Specialists for Software Platform Engineering work within the Enterprise Breeding System (EBS) Internal Services team and design, develop, test, and maintain custom software solutions for enabling product development teams to ship code to production in a secure, efficient, timely, and reliable manner.

They work with project stakeholders to identify and implement improvements in the software engineering process including the implementation of measures to ensure adherence to quality, security, and data resilience standards.

This position will be based at the IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Philippines and may only be filled by permanent citizens of the Philippines. 

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain custom software solutions for enabling product development teams to ship code to production in a secure, efficient, timely, and reliable manner
  • Help improve software quality, security, and data resilience by utilizing automation
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by conducting R&D with the objective of identifying and integrating industry best practices within the project
  • Provide support to stakeholders by providing timely responses to inquiries, requests, and reported issues
  • Guide and train stakeholders on how to use tools and processes
  • Deliver solutions to stakeholders that meet standards in quality, performance, and security within the agreed-upon timeline
  • Contribute to the team’s knowledge bank by writing and updating documentation on a variety of both technical and non-technical topics
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (or equivalent) with 2 years of related work experience
Skills Required

Mandatory

  • Practical experience in software engineering using modern programming/scripting languages and relational database management systems (preferably PostgreSQL)

Preferred

  • Basic knowledge of UNIX-based operating systems
  • Basic knowledge of containerization technologies (e.g., Docker)
  • Basic knowledge of Amazon Web Services or equivalent
  • Basic knowledge of software testing and database management
