About IRRI
The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is dedicated to reducing poverty and hunger through rice science; improving the health and welfare of rice farmers and consumers; and protecting the rice-growing environment for future generations. IRRI is an independent, nonprofit, research and educational institute, founded in 1960 by the Ford and Rockefeller foundations with support from the Philippine government. The institute, headquartered in Los Baños, Philippines, has offices in 17 rice-growing countries in Asia and Africa, and over 1,000 staff.

Working with in-country partners, IRRI develops advanced rice varieties that yield more grain and better withstand pests and disease as well as flooding, drought, and other harmful effects of climate change.
Job Purpose

Under the direct supervision of senior associate scientist, conduct research activities to support the implementation of activities related to research on the rice root-knot nematode. Main responsibilities include the timely production of the required amount of nematode inoculum and support in the establishment, maintenance and collection of data for the screening of genotypes for nematode resistance according to approved protocol.

This position will be based at the IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Philippines and may only be filled by permanent citizens of the Philippines.

  • Lead in the mass rearing of the rice root-knot nematode  (RKN) in the greenhouse and field including the sterilization of soil and maintenance of host plants
  • Extract nematodes from root samples using mistifier
  • Quantify the population density of RKN juveniles in nematode suspension
  • Assess root galling according to the required rating system
  • Quantify the population density of RKN juveniles in nematode suspension
  • Collect data to screen the resistance of genotypes to RKN (e.g., population density of RKN in root samples, weight of root and shoot biomass, and yield and yield components)
  • Assist in the establishment and maintenance of experiments on the screening of genotypes for resistance to RKN
  • Operate and maintain the mistifier used for extracting nematodes
  • Assist researchers in the documentation of procedures for mass rearing of nematodes and extraction of nematodes and training of scholars and other research technicians on the methods and techniques on nematology
