Laboratory Technician

CIMMYT is seeking a dynamic, self-motivated, and service-oriented professional for the position of Laboratory Technician to develop a high-throughput allele screen method and to identify desired crossing material.

The position is based at CIMMYT’s campus in Texcoco, State of Mexico, located 45 km northeast of Mexico City, Mexico. Please be aware that this is a full-time, strictly temporary position for 6 months. 

Specific duties: 

• Working with supervisor to develop tissue culture and transformation method for groundnut.
• Using tissue culture and molecular biology skills to complete gene editing experiments designed by the supervisor.
• Lab routine molecular biology activities, such as maintaining constructs, cloning experiments, growing cell lines and PCR.
• Support with media preparation and routine glasshouse activities, such as fertilizing plants, irrigating plants, seed multiplication etc.
• Miscellaneous lab activities that may be assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Specific deliverables:

• Development of transformation method for developing gene edited variants in groundnut.
• A record of groundnut plants in the greenhouse well fertilized and watered.
• A record of routine molecular biology activities for ongoing experiments related to PCR, Cell line growing, and construct maintenance.

Required academic qualifications, skills, and attitudes:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Science or related field.
• 1 to 3 years of experience in a similar area.
• Communicate orally on daily routine matters and prepare brief reports or complete forms without assistance in English.
• Sufficient competency to use the standard Windows-based software for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and email used at CIMMYT with occasional assistance.
• The selected candidate must exhibit the following competencies: Organization, Critical thinking, Teamwork, Client Orientation, Problem-Solving and Decision Making, Negotiation, and Conflict Resolution.
