Our team and mission
Our team belongs to the EarthCARE/Aeolus/SMOS Missions Operations Unit, within the Earth Observation Missions Division, Mission Operations Department, Directorate of Operations.
The EarthCARE/Aeolus/SMOS Missions Operations Unit is responsible, among other thinks, for the preparation of the EarthCARE Flight Operations Segment (FOS), including the execution of the Launch and Early Orbit Phase, Commissioning and Routine Phases operations of the mission. In addition, we currently operate the FOS of Aeolus and SMOS, and are in different phases of the preparations for the FORUM and HARMONY missions, among others.
Within our Unit, the teams lead the activities required to:
- develop, integrate and test all elements of the Flight Operations Segment;
- support the validation of the overall Ground Segment;
- prepare and execute the flight operations during all mission phases.

Field(s) of activity/research for the traineeship
As a Young Graduate Trainee, you will receive on-the-job-training, providing hands-on-support to the various missions operated and under development within the Unit.
In particular, some of the potential activities envisaged for the traineeship are:
- integration within and becoming a part of the assigned Flight Control Team(s);
- developing an understanding of the space segment of the assigned mission so that you can fulfil your tasks;
- writing new or updating existing flight procedures;
- familiarising yourself with the ESOC tools dedicated to the preparation and execution of operations;
- validating certain procedures with the ESOC operational simulator and the Satellite Proto-Flight Model during the System Validation Tests (SVTs) if applicable (schedule dependent);
- supporting the validation of operational simulator(s) in the areas of relevance to the deployment;
- supporting the validation of the Instrument Mission Planning concept(s).
The aforementioned specific activities of the traineeship will be tailored to your skills and interests.

You should have just completed, or be in the final year of your Master’ s degree in a technical or scientific discipline.
Additional requirements
You should have good interpersonal and communication skills and should be able to work in a multicultural environment, both independently and as part of a team.
Specific competence in one or more of the following disciplines would be considered an asset:
- Space systems engineering
- Ground systems architecture and design, including modern software tools and languages
- Space mission operations
- Astrodynamics and mission analysis
The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
