Our team and mission
The Optics Section, as part of the Mechatronics and Optics Division, provides optical engineering support to ESA projects and carries out technological research in the areas of optical component technology, optical instrumentation (spectro-radiometric imaging instruments in the visible and infrared, interferometry, optical aperture synthesis) and testing (calibration and performance verification).

Field(s) of activity/research for the traineeship
You will, as a Young Graduate Trainee, become acquainted with the principles of optical verification and characterisation tests applicable to optical space instrumentation. You will support specific tests for optical components, such as scatter, transmission/reflection and wavefront error measurements. You will be involved in the preparation, execution and analysis of these measurements.
In addition, you will support the setup and operation of optical ground test equipment for the verification and characterisation of small space instruments in the optical laboratory and will verify the correct operation of the equipment by designing and performing appropriate characterisation tests. These tests include straylight tests. Optionally, straylight correction algorithms will be explored and assessed for the achievable level of correction.
Finally, you will have the opportunity to review the design of novel instruments and carry out performance analysis activities using optical software tools.

Education
You should have just completed or be in the final year of your master’s degree in physics or optical engineering.
Additional requirements
You should have good interpersonal and communication skills and should be able to work in a multicultural environment, both independently and as part of a team.
The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
