Field(s) of activity/research for the traineeship

As a Young Graduate Trainee, you will be involved in the validation, analysis and algorithm development of remote sensing products measured from future satellites, in particular from the ESA Earth Explorer Biomass and FLEX missions.

The scope of the traineeship encompasses the investigation and development of new technologies for developing products and for providing calibration and validation using collaborative environment and open science approaches.

You will work on the definition and setup of a calibration/validation framework for biophysical parameters using data from various airborne or spaceborne missions. The objective of this activity is to:

  • provide standardised comparison and assessment of biophysical retrieval algorithms developed for the Biomass and FLEX missions with in-situ or independent datasets;
  • establish a forum to involve scientists in the development of retrievals that are not yet part of the community;
  • adopt validation standards and methods to compare biophysical estimates to reference datasets (e.g. field plots or airborne lidar biomass maps);
  • collect inputs from the user and scientific community on data formats and characteristics to facilitate the generation of analysis-ready data;
  • investigate the “new” concept of Fiducial Reference Measurement (FRM), applying a metrology approach for dataset validation. The metrology approach consists in obtaining precise and traceable uncertainty budget for the validation measurement.
