Our team and mission
The Mars Sample Transfer Arm (STA) team is based within the Mars Exploration Group in the Directorate of Human and Robotic Exploration at ESTEC. The STA robot arm will transfer Mars material collected by NASA’s Perseverance Rover on Mars to a small rocket, which will leave the surface of Mars and transport the material to the Earth Return Orbiter (ERO). ERO will eventually return the samples to Earth for detailed research in the most sophisticated laboratories.

Field(s) of activity/research for the traineeship
As a Young Graduate Trainee, you will accompany the development of the robotic system by the prime contractor, Leonardo (Italy), and its interface to the Mars lander developed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL). You may be assigned to study specific robotics-related topics and perform analyses, simulations and other assessments to support the project.

You should have just completed, or be in the final year of your Master’ s degree in a relevant subject, ideally robotics or mechatronics, but could also be mechanical engineering, software engineering or artificial intelligence.
Additional requirements
You should have good interpersonal and communication skills and should be able to work in a multicultural environment, both independently and as part of a team.
The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
