Our team and mission

Business Applications is part of the Directorate of Telecommunications and Integrated Applications and its role is to focus on business development activities, in particular through:

•    engaging with customer communities to understand their needs and requirements regarding future space-enabled solutions;
•    understanding the private investment landscape to support innovation and commercialisation approaches beyond ESA’s mandate, in collaboration with the Directorate of Commercialisation, Industry and Procurement;
•    understanding the environment and the future/transformative actions required to maintain and increase the competitivity of European space telecommunications and downstream industries.

Field(s) of activity/research for the traineeship

Green transformation is a strategic objective in ESA’s Agenda 2025. As part of this goal, green finance will be instrumental in shaping the future of the European space industry, playing three key roles:

1.    Green finance as a customer, purchasing space products and services for internal operations;
2.    Green finance as a financier, providing capital to space innovation or space infrastructure projects aligned with a green and sustainability (environmental, social and governance, ESG) ethos;
3.    Green finance as a transformative force, guiding the space industry in adopting ESG practices across the entire supply chain.

As a Young Graduate Trainee, you will work on points 2 and 3 and support point 1 when necessary. 

 

Your responsibilities will include:

•    identifying key green finance stakeholders and understanding their expectations regarding the financing of space infrastructure, products, and services;
•     creating a database of green financiers;
•    identifying opportunities for space-based solutions to capture a share of sustainable investments in the vertical market sectors;
•    assessing upcoming regulations and policies which will drive green investment in the non-space markets in the next five years;
•    organising consultation meetings / events to support space-based systems and services, securing participation of green financiers; 
•    understanding key messages from the green finance community and helping prepare a communication strategy for space;
•    providing an assessment of the green/ESG criteria, considered by impact and green investors, and performing a gap analysis with respect to the criteria used for the evaluation and  execution of ESA projects (infrastructure, products and services);
•    understanding ESG standards, reflecting on their applicability to the space industry and providing appropriate recommendations.

Education

You should have just completed, or be in the final year of your master’ s degree in finance / business discipline.

Additional requirements

Prior experience with green finance, impact investment and/or ESG standards and assessments would be an asset.

Understanding of data analysis techniques and related programming languages (such as Python and R) would be an asset.

You should have good interpersonal and communication skills and should be able to work in a multicultural environment, both independently and as part of a team.

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.

During the interview, your motivation and overall professional career goals will also be explored.
