ESA is an equal opportunity employer, committed to achieving diversity within the workforce and creating an inclusive working environment. We therefore welcome applications from all qualified candidates irrespective of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, beliefs, age, disability or other characteristics. Applications from women are encouraged.

This post is classified F1 on the Coordinated Organisations’ salary scale.

Location

ESTEC, Noordwijk, Netherlands

Our team and mission

The Galileo System Integration and Verification (SIV) team is part of the Galileo System Qualification Unit within the Directorate of Navigation.

Galileo is the European Global Navigation Satellite Service, developed by ESA for the European Commission. It provides accurate and autonomous navigation services (position, navigation and timing), as well as a search and rescue service.

The operations and services are provided under the responsibility of EUSPA, the European Union Agency for the Space Programme.

The System Integration and Verification team in the Galileo project is responsible for the qualification of new system builds developed to improve a system that provides services to more than 3 billion users. The SIV team covers both the ground segment qualification (Ground Mission Segment and Ground Control Segment) and the system qualification, including end-to-end tests with the space segment.

The SIV team is currently focusing on G1 (Galileo First Generation) but will progressively also cover Galileo Second Generation (G2) in the coming years. The full qualification of G1 is planned for March 2024 and the G2 system tests with satellites will also begin in 2024.

The G2 system tests are designed to follow the Agile method and the DevSecOps approach, where integration and testing activities will be automated as much as possible for an improved and faster life cycle of the various components integrated in the Galileo programme, from their development to their deployment, qualification and operational monitoring.

Field(s) of activity/research for the traineeship

As a Young Graduate Trainee, together with the Principal System Integration and Verification engineer, will help establish an overall programme of work and the associated planning for the Galileo system integration and verification, including ground segment integration and verification, system functional and performance verification, and field test campaigns with test user receivers.

You will also follow up with the industrial contractor tasked with the system integration and verification of Galileo, and you will contribute to the definition, preparation and execution of ground segment and system verification activities both in the main contractor’s facilities and in the Galileo Control Centres located in Italy, Germany, France and Spain.

Your work will also involve monitoring the results of the test campaigns and ensuring that any non-conformances found (both in ESA campaigns and during operational validation) are properly tracked and solved.

Your work will also cover Galileo Second Generation (G2), in particular with the preparation of the end-to-end tests with the space segment currently planned in 2024. As the G2 ground segment will follow an Agile methodology coupled with a DevSecOps approach, you will be directly involved in the continuous integration (CI) and continuous testing (CT) activities with your colleagues and our industrial partners. Your work will also include the follow up of activities related to cybersecurity aspects of the Agile/DevSecOps workflow (such as penetration test witnessing and reporting).

At the end of your traineeship, you will deliver a presentation on your achievements, with a particular focus on the SIV methodology for Agile/DevSecOps verification for G2.

The position will involve travel to other Agency sites, more particularly to the Galileo Control Centres and the industrial contractor factories to witness test campaigns.
