Our team and mission
The Propulsion, Aerothermodynamics and Flight Vehicle Engineering Division is the focal point within ESA for all matters related to spacecraft and launcher propulsion, aerothermodynamics of launchers and re-entry vehicles, as well as architectural and technology assessment of new flight vehicles.
In addition, the Division is responsible for the ESA Propulsion Laboratory, a unique facility in Europe offering opportunities for development and verification testing of propulsion components and subsystems.

Field(s) of activity/research for the traineeship
You will, as a Young Graduate Trainee, contribute to the Electric Propulsion Section as follows:
- Support to the ESA Propulsion Lab (EPL)
You will be integrated into the EPL team and assigned to the corresponding projects. You will develop through the internal EPL hierarchy of duties and responsibilities and will be trained in diagnostic systems for electric thrusters, vacuum chamber operations and test procedures, especially in the field of CubeSat propulsion.
- Study of improving the lifetime of electric thrusters: mini ion applied to real-life operation conditions
You will be trained in the operation of the mini ion thruster. You will also use it to analyse different conditions, materials and components during tests in real-life operating conditions. You will study data from these tests in order to assess possible improvements in the operating lifetime of electric thrusters.

Education
You should have just completed or be in the final year of your master’s degree in a technical or scientific discipline.
Specific competence in one of the following disciplines will be considered an asset: plasma physics, aerospace, electrical and mechanical engineering.
Additional requirements
You should have good interpersonal and communication skills and should be able to work in a multicultural environment, both independently and as part of a team.
The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
