The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
The overall objective of UNEP's Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities.
This post is located in UNEP's Economy Division, Energy and Climate Branch, Secretariat for the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), at the Paris duty station. The CCAC is a voluntary multi-stakeholder partnership working at the Nexus of climate and clean air. It supports and catalyses the reduction of short-lived climate pollutants by fostering and strengthening high-level commitments, mobilizing partners (including UNEP), raising awareness, supporting sectoral and national planning, policy and implementation, advancing policy-relevant methane, HFC and black carbon analysis and tools, strengthening institutions, and scaling up finance. It also supports the implementation of the Global Methane Pledge (GMP), embodying the Secretariat to the GMP.
Under the supervision of the Head of the Secretariat of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition, the incumbent will support the UNEP-hosted CCAC Secretariat in advocacy on the multiple benefits of short-lived climate pollutants, outreach on CCAC core products, and giving visibility to partner actions and will be responsible for the following duties:
Plan and coordinate strategic outreach
• Engage CCAC partners in outreach and communication;
• Ensure timely implementation of CCAC communications strategy;
• Coordinate a CCAC communications group composed of communications staff of partners;
• Liaise with the CCAC SAP, UNEP Science and Communications Division as well as UNEP Regional Office Communications Teams to craft stories that communicate well the multiple benefits of SLCP action and highlight CCAC and partner actions and achievements; target and motivate communications champions.
Develop external and internal media plans for key workstreams, reports, or activities
• Work with Secretariat team and partners to produce and place opinion pieces with external media;
• Conduct journalist outreach and briefings with news producers and reporters in order to provide targeted interviews and stories;
• Respond to and provide messaging for unexpected and fast-moving global events (e.g. COVID-19, regulation changes, relevant external announcements, partner press announcements); • Improve internal communication, both inside the CCAC Secretariat, across UNEP teams and with partners and the wider UN, in order to ensure message coherence, relevance, and coordination for joint outreach;
• Support the Secretariat team in interview preparation and messaging. Improve media monitoring capabilities to track stories and SLCP subject matter. Improve media CCAC and UNEP media contact list.
Coordinate the development and production of communications materials and content to support the Coalition’s goals and priorities
• Ensure the timely creation of all content including those by external partners and contractors;
• Write, coordinate and edit stories, press releases, speeches, brochures, factsheets, etc.
• Work with the design team on updating and creating new info-graphics and other design elements, in close coordination with SAP and technical experts.
• Function as web-editor and ensure that the CCAC website is the central info hub for SLCP / Climate and Clean Air action as well as specifically Methane action linked to the new Global Methane Pledge; Draft and edit content as needed;
• Support social media outreach. Collect images and video footage to use on all CCAC platforms. Including scripting, shooting and editing video products (interviews, stories, etc.) where requested.
Deliver specific time-bound campaigns such as the Breathe Life campaign in the past, and the new effort around the Methane Flagship; monitor CCAC Strategic Planning and sectoral Hubs for communications opportunities and needs.
Provide Communications Support to CCAC Workstreams.
• Ensure all publications adhere to branding guide, in particular signature publications (e.g. assessment reports), are supported with a comprehensive roll-out strategy (media outreach, events), web support, infographics, and other supporting communications materials.
• Close coordination with those involved in the production of technical and scientific reports to ensure content and language is audience relevant and the findings are clear and easily understandable.
• Assist colleagues to identify success and narrative stories from their work and ensure they are featured in relevant publications and platforms (website, social media, annual reports, external media).
• Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
Other support to the Head of the Secretariat of CCAC and to activities of the Economy Division.

An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in communication, journalism or related area is required.
A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.
A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in communication to decision-makers in government and private sector, and the broader public at national and international levels is required.
Experience with media and public relations or related field is required.
Experience in editing of press releases, forewords for reports, editing of web and social media content is required.
Experience in organizing dialogues and public consultations and communications campaigns is desirable.
Experience in communications on environmental and/or health related issues is desirable.
Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required, and knowledge of French and / or Spanish is desirable.
