ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

 

The Partnerships and Advocacy Department (PA) provides leadership and expertise to WFP’s global positioning, partnering and resourcing efforts to continue Saving Lives and Changing Lives. To this effect, PA steers WFP’s strategic engagement with governments, the UN system and its Member States, corporations, global foundations, international financial institutions, academia, think-tanks and the public at large.

As the Director of the Global Office in London, you will be leading a small but strategic Office with a narrower focus on the positioning and partnering aspects as well as some elements of the resourcing portfolio, with support from PA Divisions in Headquarters.

 

The objective of the London Office is to create an enabling environment for fundraising and to raise the profile of WFP in the UK. The Office helps lead organization-wide efforts to meet resourcing needs through active engagement with the British Government and Parliament, and public sector institutions while also working to position WFP as a leading UN implementing agency. 

 

The Global Office in London strives to shape public opinion as well as influence policymakers, parliamentarians, and supporters in the UK to sustain funding for humanitarian assistance as well as for longer-term development activities. A key piece of this is to position WFP as an attractive partner for the corporate sector and continue expanding on successful growth in individual giving. 

 

Reporting to the Assistant Executive Director for PA, this Director position will lead the London Office and work closely with a network of peer Global Office Directors in key donor capitals around the globe. 

 

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

 

  • Represent WFP vis-à-vis the national authorities, UN system, regional bodies, Member States and/or other selected partners, as applicable in the location of assignment.
  • Formulate and implement WFP’s partnership engagement strategy as per the context-specific WFP Global Office TOR and wider UN strategies to ensure continuous support to field operations and meet the mandate of WFP.
  • Identify and build productive relationships with a broad range of relevant public/private decision-makers, influencers and constituencies in order to advance WFP’s corporate strategies, policies and procedures, attract resources and promote transfer of knowledge, expertise and technological innovation.
  • Demonstrate ownership when promoting and deploying corporate initiatives and ensure that WFP’s partnership engagement is aligned with these and wider UN strategies, policies and processes.
  • Disseminate WFP analyses, studies and innovations to a wider audience with a view to position WFP, raise brand awareness and inform technical and policy dialogue; Increase WFP’s capacity to attain, share and use knowledge for positioning, partnering and resourcing purposes.
  • Contribute to a network of peer WFP Global Office Directors worldwide, providing analysis of trends, opportunities and potential risks to the WFP Leadership Group and/or other appropriate WFP counterparts to facilitate integrated solutions that address hunger and the root causes of hunger.
  • Propose strategies for WFP senior/executive staff engagement to reinforce technical dialogue and expand political outreach; actively participate in or co-lead national, UN and other multilateral fora to generate support for Zero Hunger, advance WFP’s leadership in areas of specialization and position WFP effectively vis-à-vis relevant decision makers and influencers.
  • Hold accountability for transparent and efficient people management, staff development and coaching to expand the reach and depth of the partnership function.
  • Hold accountability for standards, guidance and processes within the Office; Provide effective leadership to the Office team, enabling implementation of best practices and high performance, and ensure best use of financial resources for the achievement of set objectives.
  • Take lead to ensure that evaluation, audit and compliance recommendations are efficiently implemented within the Office.
  • Take concrete actions which promote health and wellbeing within the workplace and mitigate risks related to stress, health and safety.
  • Take appropriate measures to foster a safe and harmonious work environment in which employees are protected from exposure to any form of abusive conduct (harassment, sexual harassment, abuse of authority, and discrimination), and act as a role model in reflecting respect towards all employees.
  • Accountable for an equitable and inclusive workplace which incorporates all dimensions of the WFP diversity and inclusion framework.

QUALIFICATIONS AND KEY REQUIREMENTS

 

Education: 

 

You have: 

 

  • Advanced university degree in Political Science, Economics, International Development, Social Sciences, or other relevant area, or first university degree with additional relevant experience and/or advanced training/courses.

 

Experience: 

 

You have:

 

  • Typically, eleven years of experience (of which six international) in a relevant field of work;
  • Acquired a Management role in fundraising and partnerships;
  • Strong understanding of the British political landscape;
  • Wide and active network within the local political institutions as well as in think tanks, academia, media, etc. 

 

Language: 

 

You have:

 

  • Fluency (level C) in the English language. 
  • Minimum of intermediate knowledge (level B) of a second official UN language: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish, and/or WFP’s working language, Portuguese.

You have:

 

  • Broad knowledge of diverse humanitarian assistance and development practices;
  • Ability to lead, coach and motivate large and diverse teams and drive improving performance;
  • Excellent diplomatic skills and management acumen, with the ability to leverage external partnerships to optimize resources for WFP;
  • A track record of dealing with and politically influencing at the highest levels within and beyond the organization;
  • Ability to assimilate and analyze complex issues to develop strategies and policies;
  • Sound understanding of business principles and processes and the ability to quickly assimilate UN / WFP-specific strategies, processes and systems.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

 

Mobility is and continues to be, a core contractual requirement in WFP. The selected candidate will be employed on a fixed term as well as a rotational contract with a probationary period of one year.

 

WFP offers an attractive compensation and benefits package in line with ICSC standards (http://icsc.un.org) including basic salary, post adjustment, relocation entitlement, visa, travel and shipment allowances, 30 days’ annual leave, home leave, an education grant for dependent children, a pension plan, and medical insurance.

 

The selected candidate will be required to relocate to London, UK to take up this assignment.
