Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

UNEP/New York Office is responsible for strategic linkages with the UN system, key partners, and stakeholders in the context of the interagency and Intergovernmental processes based in UN Headquarters. In particular, via the Environment Management Group Secretariat (EMG) and the UNEP Sustainable UN initiative (SUN), the New York Office supports inter-agency processes focused on integrating environmental sustainability effectively and coherently in the UN system operations and programmes.

While the EMG and the SUN are based in Geneva, this position is placed in the New York Office to facilitate the bridging and scaling up implementation of their work through UN interagency work in New York. The incumbent will be under the joint responsibility of the Head of the EMG Secretariat in Geneva and the Senior Interagency Officer in New York, reporting directly to the latter and serve the coherent implementation of the UN Sustainability Strategy in policies, programmes and operations by performing the following duties:

Responsibilities

A. Assist the overall implementation of the UN Sustainability Strategy by:
1) Supporting the EMG Secretariat and NY Office in liaising with interagency networks on the topics related to internal sustainability management.
2) Assisting in reporting and data management associated with the UN Sustainability Strategy in policies, programmes and operations.
3) Supporting management of affairs related to the Sustainability Strategy implementation.
4) Acting as resource person on advice for environmental sustainability of programmes and operations.

B. Assist SUN and the Environment Management Group, through the New York office, with their liaison with other
interagency networks and New York based UN system bodies.
1) Mainstreaming and implementation of environmental priorities UN system-wide.
2) Providing support in meetings, agenda setting, progress analyses and communications.
3) Providing analyses and research that support the work of the EMG and the NYO in providing a system wide perspective to multilateral policy discussions.
4) Representing NY Office, the EMG and SUN in interagency meetings and discussions as necessary.
5) Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.

C. Any other tasks assigned in support of the work of the NY Office, the EMG and SUN.

Uses time efficiently.

COMMUNICATION: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors language, tone, style and format to match audience; demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.

Education

An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in business administration, environmental management, international relations or related fields is required.

A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience

A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in environmental and sustainable development policy is required.

At least three (3) years of experience at the international level is required.

Relevant experience with the UN system or a similar international organization administrative processes is desirable.

Relevant experience in environmental and social governance reporting, accountability frameworks and programmatic evaluation is desirable.

Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

NOTE: ''Fluency'' equals a rating of ''fluent'' in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and ''Knowledge of'' equals a rating of ''confident'' in two of the four areas.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Appointment against this position is for an initial period of one year and may be subject to extension.
