Mission and objectives

United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the environmental entity of the United Nations System, established in 1972, and tasked with keeping the environmental situation under review and providing capacity building and support to member states in key priority areas. UNEP West Asia Office coordinates the implementation of UNEP’s Programme of Work in West Asia, with a focus on enabling member states and stakeholders to achieve their visions for sustainable development.

Context

UNEP sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. This position is established at the West Asia Office, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia within the framework of the Strategic Cooperation Agreement between UNEP and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Under the overall supervision of the Project Manager responsible for the Saudi Environment Sustainability Programme, UNEP West Asia Office

Task description

Within the delegated authority and under overall supervision of the project manager, the UNV will perform the following duties: 1. Complete and collect baseline data and targets Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) aspects of the programme. 2. Create monitoring tools for the program and respective projects, including the creation and maintaining technical and operational Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). 3. Maintain a comprehensive log of programme deliverables. 4. Establish and implement system for measuring customer satisfaction and collect regular feedback. 5. Lead the preparation of regular reporting to SESP Steering Committee and UNEP Senior teams. 6. Measure the performance and deliverables of UNEP experts. 7. Prepare for programme mid-term and final reviews and evaluations. 8. Support monitoring and evaluation missions by the regional office and HQs 9. Review monthly reports to extract challenges and lesson learned and regularly report and present. 10. Contribute to the programme monthly and yearly reporting. Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities: • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day). • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country. • Provide annual and end of assignment self-reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities. • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc. • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers. • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
