Purpose of consultancy

To discuss neonatology related aspects of provision of care within the research project, analysis and manuscript development on small and sick newborn care (SSNC).

Background

WHO is coordinating a multi-country research on small or sick newborns in low-income settings (S. Asia Sub Saharan Africa, EMRO), which involves care in the SNCU/ NICU for babies who are premature, low birth weight, have sepsis or asphyxia.

Deliverables:

Deliverable 1:

  • Discuss the neonatology related aspects of provision of small and/or sick newborn care.
  • Follow up on the implementation of neonatal protocols within the research project and trouble shoot and advise site teams on issues related to neonatal units.

Expected by month 6: a write up of the neonatology support provided to the project.

Deliverable 2:

  • Draft with the WHO team and the site investigators, scientific manuscripts on the above related neonatology research projects.

Expected by month 11.

Qualifications, experience, skills and languages.

Educational Qualifications:

Essential:

  • University degree in Medicine with a specialization in pediatrics/neonatology.

Desirable:

  • Formal qualification in neonatology.

Experience

Essential:

  • 5 years clinical experience in a level 2/3 SNCU/NICU in a low-income country setting.
  • Research experience in low- and middle-income countries within the NICU/ SNCU.

Desirable:

  • Experience in research focus (implementation research) with focus on the care of small or sick newborns in SNCU in LMIC.

Skills/Knowledge

Essential:

  • Knowledge of quantitative research methods as evidenced by peer reviewed publications related newborn health.
  • Basic/ intermediate knowledge of stata or equivalent statistical package.

Languages required:

Essential:

  • Expert knowledge of English.

Location

Off-site - Home based.

Travel

The consultant is expected to travel.

Remuneration and budget (travel costs are excluded):

Remuneration:

Band level B-USD 7,000 - 9,980 per month.

Living expenses (A living expense is payable to on-site consultants who are internationally recruited):

N/A

Expected duration of contract:

11 months – part-time at 50%. Remuneration will be pro-rated accordingly.
