IRC Background:

Founded in 1933, the IRC is a leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. In the U.S., IRC provides assistance to refugees resettling here through 27 offices operating in 16 states. IRC resettles approximately 11,000 refugees per year and provides numerous program services to assist the refugee from their arrival through citizenship. The IRC in Salt Lake City opened it office in 1994 and provides resettlement services through extended case management to newly arrived refugees for up to 24-months as well as over twenty different programs to educate and empower refugees. 

Job Overview:

The Digital Inclusion Program operates within the IRC SLC’s Education Program and supports digital skill development for newly arrived refugees and New Americans. The program provides clients with access to technology and cultivates a set of fundamental tech skills to improve their lives and livelihoods. With oversight from the Digital Inclusion Coordinator, the Digital Inclusion Assistant will support home broadband enrollments for newly arrived refugees, provide basic training on computer and smartphone use, and ongoing technical support for refugee clients. Digital connectivity is a critical issue for newly arrived clients and technological barriers prevent access to IRC services, such as online health, job readiness, and ESL platforms. In addition to providing basic tech support, they will help keep an inventory of donated digital devices for distribution.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Conduct Digital Inclusion intakes and administer digital skills assessments for new arrivals.
  • Assist with computer distribution and basic computer-use skills training.
  • Gather documents and support refugee households’ affordable internet service enrollment, including access to the government’s Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP).
  • Provide one-on-one training session of core digital skills and tools such as basic internet use, Zoom, Microsoft Office programs.
  • Maintain the computer inventory and other in-kind technology equipment for new arrivals.
  • Maintain program documentation, case files, data tracking, client influence, and other areas of administrative compliance.
  • Participate in all staff meetings, trainings, office support, reception coverage and other duties as assigned.  
  • Comply with all policies and protocols of the agency.
  • Establish working relationships with clients, co-workers, and other professionals.
  • Work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Display cultural competency, appreciation, compassion and understanding for the needs of clients.
  • Support client transportation to DI classes and other educational opportunities.

Education/Work Experience:

  • Associates Degree or relevant work experience that demonstrates competencies to meet the job responsibilities.

Demonstrated Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills are required.
  • Experience working and communicating effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills and ability to multi-task, prioritize duties, and manage time effectively.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in work product.
  • Fluent in English, both spoken and written.
  • Fluency in a language spoken by one or more of the refugee groups IRC is serving (Arabic, Dari, Dinka, Farsi, Kinyarwanda, Pashto, Sango, Swahili, Uzbek) preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook); ability to use the internet and other digital tools for data entry, research and problem-solving purposes.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a personal, insured vehicle.
  • Ability to lift 35+ lbs. Safely.

Working Environment: 

  • Standard office environment with regular participation in community outreach and events.
  • May require occasional weekend and/or evening work.
  • Ability to be flexible and work well under pressure in a fast-paced team environment.
